March
California Supreme Court Will Hear Arguments on Proposition 8
(last paragraph)
Until there is a final ruling, same sex marriage ceremonies will be unable to resume. Shannon Price Miller, a litigator in the case and a lawyer for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, told the Los Angeles Times that "we are concerned that there may be some couples who will never be able to marry because of this." The Court does not plan to hear oral arguments until March

18,000 marriages in some sort of legal twilight zone until March. People who shouldn't have to consider the word "allow" when making the choice to marry.

You know, I'm not a marriage fan for reasons you could consider feminist. I got married anyway for reasons you could consider practical. The one, and only time I'll ever do it. Didn't marry my first two children's father(s) Thank Fucking God. I did marry the father of my two step-daughters. Him having had the experience of being a single father maybe had something to do with it I dunno.

But I had that choice. I have the luxury of opinion without censure, at least none from anybody I needed to listen to. Nobody told me what my opinion should be in any meaningful way, because I have what you might call hetero entitlement. Nobody "allowed" me to marry.

Prop 8 HAS to be unconstitutional, it's a given that it's morally and ethically repugnant. Legally I hope to hell it is as well.

1. I guess money talks...

...and is heard more readily that "rights." I'm still disturbed that this was allowed on a ballot, AFTER it was determined that not allowing same sex couples to marry legally was unconstitutional. On the basis of that decision, Prop 8 IS unconstitutional. I wish people would focus on that, and the people that fronted the money to get this placed on a ballot.

Apparently, people like this, in another state:

Texans donated money to ban CA gay weddings:

But I guess that's brown people's fault, too.

2. Those people are crazy
Did you read this at IBTP?

Meanwhile, during a brief moment of connectivity, I note a trend toward blaming “minorities” for the wild success of recent gay marriage bans. I would suggest (again) that those most concerned with penis placement are godbags first and “minorities” second. My suspicions about the structure of Hetero-American culture are threefold
Fold number one: Godbags — and their non-proselytizing but higher-power-believin’ brethren, the godbag-lites — regardless of race, creed, or color, are the majority in the US.* Fold number two: even if they weren’t the majority, godbags like to vote more than truthbags. Fold number three: Heterosexual honkys, as a general category, hate homos as much as the next guy.

How disgusting, from your link;

"I'm always going to be there for families,” said Dr. Arlo Terry, a local ophthalmologist. “If I feel anything threatens the traditional family in the United States, I'm going to be there supporting families. Anyone who knows me knows I will do that.”

You know, when my birth children were little, it was just me and them. Neither one of their fathers have ever been involved with them and I mean from pregnancy and birth. And I'd do it that way again dispite the insight from hindsight I have now. The last thing we were, was "traditional"

My daughter served for nearly 9 years in the Army and my son is finishing his AIT training in the National Guard. (No I didn't like it but they're grown) So these assholes want to tell me about freedom and country and values? My kids believe in that shit more than I do, and they're aren't hateful, pathological homophobic shitheads. They understand human value and human rights.

I must have done something right.

Yay--IBTP...!

I appreciate this, as I hadn't seen it-yet. Glad twisty's back!
Did you catch this link from one of the comments?

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/prop-8-myths.html

excerpt from link:

At the end of the day, Prop 8's passage was more a generational matter than a racial one. If nobody over the age of 65 had voted, Prop 8 would have failed by a point or two. It appears that the generational splits may be larger within minority communities than among whites, although the data on this is sketchy.

We all have memories of negative experiences at the hands of some "other." It's how we process it that matters (and probably a contributing factor in making you a good parent ;)).

It's easy to allow such experiences to define entire groups for us, and more challenging not to. But there is a choice, one way or the other.

4. I never got married, and now never will.
I had the chance to marry two women where well aware that I'm bisexual. Never had the chance to marry the one men I wanted to ask.

The whole issue of how much we should uphold marriage and/or want to get married is a quagmire all by itself even before the religious wackos on the right get involved. They just make it all worse.

I hope Prop. 8 goes down in legal flames so we can go back to figuring out on our own terms what marriage means and how we want to pursue it or handle it with our own groups and communities.

by the way, I missed you all. I'm back. :)
