The U.S., which was ranked 10th last month, moved past France, which fell two spots, England, Portugal and Spain. The rankings are based on the results of 61 international matches in recent weeks. Germany had the biggest improvement, moving up 10 spots to 11th from 21st.
The ranking was disclosed a day before the U.S. team, which has won two World Cup qualifying matches over the past six weeks, is scheduled to face Honduras in the semifinals of the Gold Cup in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The Gold Cup is the regional championship for the North and Central America and Caribbean region. World Cup champion Brazil remained in the top spot in FIFA's rankings, followed by Argentina, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Mexico.
