LINCOLN — Signs point to Bo Pelini as Nebraska's next head football coach, and he'll likely be introduced by Sunday or Monday, multiple sources have told The World-Herald.
Bo Pelini celebrates with Pat Ricketts after the Husker player's interception to end Colorado's last drive in Nebraska's 31-22 win over the Buffaloes in 2003. In Pelini's one year at Nebraska, the Blackshirts ranked 11th nationally in total defense.
Two people close to the Husker program also said Shawn Watson and Ted Gilmore were considered candidates to remain on the coaching staff, and possibly one other assistant who worked under Bill Callahan. Watson and Gilmore did not return calls to The World-Herald on Friday night.
Pelini, a former Nebraska defensive coordinator, did not answer calls Friday night to his cell phone or hotel room in Atlanta. The third-year Louisiana State defensive coordinator is preparing for the Tigers' game at the Georgia Dome against Tennessee today for the Southeastern Conference championship.
LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman was reached at the team hotel and said: "I can tell you this, Bo Pelini doesn't know anything about it."
Interim NU Athletic Director Tom Osborne, given the opportunity to deny reports, said his only comment was "that we've not made any announcement and won't make any until we're ready."
Asked if NU was done with interviews, Osborne said: "I don't anticipate interviewing any more people."
