What do you think about the Super Bowl?
If I was just gonna pick a team, I'd pick the Steelers.

But if I were a betting man (and I sure as hell am), I'd take the Seahawks and the points. The oddsmakers have the Steelers up by 3.5 points. Even if the Steelers win (which is far from a sure thing), I can see a game wherein the Steelers win by a field goal, failing to beat the spread.

Opinions?

1. If our defense (Steelers) plays at the level they have been
playing, I don't see Seattle scoring many points on us. Everything is clicking for the Steelers. I think it is their destiny to have a big game.

4. I don't believe in destiny...
I believe in Las Vegas oddsmakers.

That said, I think you're certainly right. If the Steelers can shut down Seattle's running game completely, the game could turn into a blow out.

2. Oh the Steelers should clearly be the underdogs...
I want all the "experts" to talk us down just like they have throughout the post-season. Seattle is an excellent team and deserves respect.

We Steeler fans like being underestimated...keeps our team hungry.

3. Y'know, I DID say I'd pick the Steelers in a straight-ahead decision...
it's the first line of my OP. I'm just saying that there's a strong case for picking the Seahawks and the points. That's all. And I certainly don't claim to be an "expert."

5. No, I mean the ESPN and network "experts"....I want them to pick Seattle
They've been minimizing the Steelers throughout the playoffs and picking the opponents to win...I hope they keep it up.;)

But I'd be happy if all the newspapers, sport's blogs and non-Pittsburgh fans also pick Seattle too.

Seriously, though, Seattle looked ready and tough in yesterday's game and I wouldn't take anything away from those guys. It'll be a tough game.

6. The Steelers can't possibly be the underdogs
They play in the all-mighty AFC! You know, the conference with juggernauts like the Colts, Broncos, Bengals, and Patriots.

Heck, any team from the AFC would surely beat the best team from the Junior Varsity NFC.

Sorry, slipped into my mainstream NFL analyst mode there for a second.

You guys are the favorites and the critics pick. Sorry, but you'll have to deal with it.

16. A shitload. I got Seahawks and 5.5 freaking points!
One point over the final point spread. Too good to refuse. I even wrote a blog entry on it (http://blog.myspace.com/12266557):

Goddamn Punkass Seahawks
Current mood: angry
Category: Sports

What the hell was wrong with these dupes? I'm no Seattle fan (nor am I a Pittsburgh fan), but I at least expected the Seahawks to beat the spread. This was supposed to be a defensive game! A tight, low score was obvious from the outset. And it looked that way, right up until the last minutes of the fourth quarter, when Seattle allowed one last touchdown and let the Steelers take the spread, breaking the hearts of thousands, if not millions, of serious sports gamblers. Were it not for one dumb 75-yard run, or that incredibly stylish reverse pass play, we could've all been a lot richer. But I suppose we are all richer in experience now, gaining wisdom with age. Except for the Seahawks. They've probably learned nothing from this. Hasselback caved, Shaun Alexander looked not-at-all like the league's best rusher, and one of the most vaunted O-lines in the NFL allowed sack after sack. What a bunch of bitches.

17. The reason I never bet on sports, unless it's a straight "to win" bet, for
the team I actually like, is that you can get caught up in the scenario where your team wins, but you still lose money. I.E. the betting steals the some or all of the enjoyment.

I guess it's cool if you're not a fan of either team.

18. From a gambling perspective, though...
You shouldn't get involved with any team you're a fan of. You start thinking with your heart instead of your head.

19. That's true, but if I feel that I can lose 50 bux or whatever for making
an "entertainment" bet on my sentimental team, especially if they actually have a reasonable shot at winning, I'll sometimes make that bet.

If my sentimental team is a super long shot without much chance, then I either won't bet at all, or if I do it'll be a small one (say 10 bux) that I expect to lose, but that much more the windfall if I win. Example: Maryland or Georgetown to win the NCAA men's hoops tourney any year recently if they got into the tourney and weren't a top 10 type of powerhouse (which is most of the time).

Example of a reasonable straight up bet: Chargers vs. Cowboys early in the season.. I bet Chargers straight up (I can't remember the gambling term for this), they were actually favored if I recall. Of course they lost, but no conflict for me.
