Question for Old Timey Cowboy and Steeler fans: Jackie Smith Drop

In my dim recollection of that Super Bowl, I thought the Steelers were up by a decent margin, and the game was only as close as it was at the end because of some "garbage time-ish" points towards the end by Dallas, so I didn't think that Smith's dropped pass in the end zone really determined the outcome the way the score made it look.

Am I off base?
