"As the cool weather arrives, our thoughts turn to staying warm without creating big energy bills. Could geothermal be the answer for new homes?

Geothermal systems are considered to be among the most energy-efficient, environmentally clean and cost-effective available today.

Subdivisions across North America are using geothermal technology as their source of heat in winter and cool air during the summer.

Geothermal works on the principle that the earth or ground water below the frost line remains at the constant temperature of between 7C and 24C , depending upon where you live. This ground temperature is warmer than the winter air outside our homes and cooler than the hot summer air.

If you can loop liquid (water) through ground pipes that lie below the frost line, you can reheat the water as it travels back into the ground during the cool months or conversely, send or sink hot air into the ground for cooling the water as it loops back through the earth during summer.

1. I'll let you know how it works
in Kansas in a year. We are putting one in and should move in and start using it around April or May. Apparently they work quite well. Ours will be in the pond, the people around here who have them are all in the ground so we will see.
