To save money, I cut my kids hair yesterday
rather than taking them to a salon. I actually really like my son's cut. People have commented on how cute he looks. My daughters hair is more problematic. She has very straight hair and wears bangs. I am having difficulty getting the bangs even. I cut very little, so I still have some length to work with. I will try again later today to get things evened up.

My husband wants me to cut his hair, now. Makes me nervous. When a child has a funny hair cut, everyone assumes that they would not sit still or they cut their own hair or something. When a forty year old man shows up at his professional job looking like Ernie from Sesame Street, well that is less funny. Maybe I will cut his hair after practicing a few times on the kids.........

Bet I can trim my own bangs, too :)

1. my bangs trick
was to cut the length I wanted at the center of the bangs (all combed straight forward), and then cut outward from center to match.

Did that make any sense at all as I described it? I think I need more caffeine this morning.

You might look at the local library for a how to book on haircutting. My daughter and I wear our hair straight and long and we've been cutting our own (and each other's) for years. Saves a lot.

3. I'd like to save money by cutting my own.
I have been going to Cost Cutters and they do as good a job as the more pricey salons I have gone to. All I need is a blunt cut. But I have curly hair. I think the salons are such a rip off.

5. Hah, did my own bangs today!
They look good. I may have a second career brewing here.... I wish I could figure out how to cut the rest myself.

I have a thread going in the lounge about Flowbee. A Flowbee is a haircutting device that hooks up to your vacuum cleaner. You take the haircutting device, adjust for the length you want, turn the vacuum on, and it automatically cuts your hair. I am not making this up. But there were a few who said they used Flowbee with good results. Might be just crazy enough to work :D

With a Flowbee, I could cut my own hair. But if it went wrong, I would have to admit what I had done. Probably best to try it out on the kids and hubby first.

7. Unfortunately
Everytime I have gone to get a $6 haircut...that is exactly what I got.
A $6 haircut.
I refuse to do it anymore and when I can't afford a good haircut...I wear long hair, lol.

4. I used to cut my husband's hair
It's curly and he used to wear it longer. One trick was to take a comb and mark off inches along the back of it. I just used a warm knife and cut slashes at every inch. It worked out well. Not that this will help your situation but it came to mind. My hubby wore his curly hair at about 2 to 3 inches long and it helped to have a guide.

6. I thinned the bangs today and snipped little bits out.
They look better. Because they are not a perfectly straight line, it doesn't matter anymore if they are a little off center.

Having a guide would probably help to keep things even. I will have to screw my courage up a little before I try to cut the back of her hair. Although, if it goes wrong, I can always take her into the salon and get it trimmed up. Or maybe now would be a good time to start growing it out :)

8. I think that is one of the secrets - cut the bangs so that they
are shortest near the middle and then slope downward toward the left and right sides. If you try to cut exactly straight it is harder. Also - if you get really brave, try using a razor instead of scissors. If you use a razor the hair is 'fluffier' and the edge is softened.

:kick:

11. I dunno, with a razor, I might end up taking an ear off or something.
I actually had my son in a head lock for part of his haircut.

Maybe in a few years.....

9. Bangs trick: Scotch tape
Try to do this with dry or only slightly damp bangs, since wet hair won't work. Run a piece of scotch tape across the forehead where you want the bangs, then cut along the bottom edge of the tape. The tape has a straight edge, so no issues getting them straight, and if kid wiggles, the tape will hold the hair steady.

This keeps the bangs from looking like a Harriet Miers Haircut... i.e. done by oneself, in the dark, while drunk, with hedge clippers.

I'll be that could work for a blunt cut all the way around, too.
