1. It doesn't put any more heat into the room
than an open candle flame does. What it does do is hold that heat in a heat sink at living levels, so that when you're close to it, you'll feel a little more radiant heat than you would from an open flame.

The open flame radiates very little and convection, the main process, carries its heat right up to the ceiling.

This could easily be made at home for much, much less by the looks of it.
