Turn ugly dresses into nice ones for $1
"Marisa Lynch set herself a challenge: Transform 365 unattractive frocks in 365 days, for $365. Just before her 30th birthday, she got laid off. To some, losing a job means hitting the streets with a resume or wallowing in grief. But for Marisa, it meant getting the sewing machine out and upcycling thrifted fashions. Every day."

some pics here - I wish I were that creative!!

1. My strategy was to overdye
That army surplus green woolen blazer was really nice in chocolate brown and fugly purple sweater with the rhinestones all over it was quite stunning in black, sans rhinestones. Taking up and taking in worked a lot better when I was built like an ironing board. Voluminous thrift shop gear stayed that way with maybe a dart here or there to give it a little shape.

Supermarkets still sell Rit dyes and they're good for cotton, linen, rayon, and some blends. You can dye polyester but it won't be particularly colorfast, so expect to wash it separately. For wool and other animal fibers, you'll need acid dyes from a craft store.

For $1.29 in dye, you can go from fugly to fabulous in a lot of things.
