For those thinking of going off grid then these are worth a look.

See them in action here: http://www.youtube.com/user/GREENPOWERSCIENCE?blend=1&ob=5#p/u/12/d1glfC52wmg

Then you can purchase them $300 for 124 watt @ 48 Volts. http://greenpowerscience.com/SOLARPANEL124.php
... better price than Amazon and from a trustworthy source.

And for a simple explanation on how to hook up multiple solar panels to multiple batteries:

... Solar Panels >>> charge controller >>> batteries >>> inverter >>> to your electrical outlets to power AC equipment like drills/saws, lightbulbs, etc. Professional electrician required if it's your house...

2. So how many of these to run
your water heater or say 50% of your heating/cooling?

I will use anywhere from 800-1600 Kwh in a month. The upper end is height of summer dog days/dead of winter chill. Most times its in the 1000 range.

3. Forgot to add
This is a small house, about 1250 sq ft. I rarely am using more than one major appliance at a time. For example, I'm rarely either washing dishes OR laundry, but not both.
