Militants lobbed a grenade at the house of a Kashmiri dervish in Sopore town of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, killing two persons and injuring 14. The dervish escaped unhurt. Deputy Inspector-General of Police, North Kashmir Range, Abdus Subhan Lone told The Hindu that militants hurled a grenade at the house of dervish Abdul Ahad in Noorbagh locality around 1.50 p.m. A large number of his followers had gathered there. The grenade exploded in the compound of the house, seriously injuring over 20 persons. Ahad Saheb, as the dervish is popularly known, escaped unhurt. "He was around but he is safe," his son Gulrez said.
This is the first such attack on a dervish in Kashmir. The State has a sizeable number of dervishes, as the Sufi tradition of Islam is being followed by a majority of people. No militant outfit has owned the responsibility for the attack.
