Is drawing and music really forbidden in Islam?

I used to be on the Islamic path and that was one of the reasons why I left. Is it true or is it just something that is fundamentalist?

I am an artist and I love music so I can't imagine giving that up.

Firstly, in the Quran, we are told that whatever is not expressly forbidden is permissible. While the Quran does prohibit us from sculpting Idols or creating religious icons there is no solid Prohibition on drawing or photographing anything else.

There is one verse in the Quran that is sometimes cited as a basis for a Prohibition against music, but it is taken far out of context and in no way prohibits music.

As far as Hadeeth go, I can find conflicting sound Hadeeth, thus I am forced to look at the Quran for guideance... In which case I can find no Prohibition.

In general, I would say, that as long as the music doesn't promote a haram action it's ok.

3. As one on the Chisti Sufi path

which celebrates getting closer to the One via music and song, I can assure you that the answer with us is NO. Though my husband has had some interesting discussions about the hadeeths with some more conservative brothers on another board.
