An out-of-state bus carrying hurricane relief volunteers lost control and crashed on eastbound Interstate 10 near the Poydras Street/Superdome exit Saturday afternoon, killing one passenger and injuring several others, police said.

A 25-year-old Portland, Maine, woman died at the scene after she was ejected through the windshield, landing beneath the bus, a passenger said. Police withheld her name pending notification of family. The one-vehicle accident, which happened just before 1:30 p.m., disrupted eastbound traffic on the Pontchartrain Expressway, where I-10 splits off from the elevated roadway for hours as firefighters and police cordoned off the scene to investigate.

Police said the driver, identified as Alyssa Wisehart, 20, of Connecticut, may have made a last-moment decision to take I-10 toward Slidell, swerved and then overcorrected, causing the bus to veer out of control. The bus hit guardrails on both sides of the expressway before flipping on its right side and blocking two lanes of traffic, police spokeswoman Jonette Williams said.

Three passengers were taken to Charity Hospital with serious injuries and five others refused medical treatment, according to New Orleans emergency medical services administrator Ken Bouvier.
