Government Jobs
Forgive me for being trite but I have been trying to get into the Government for nearly two years now. If anyone would have a great governemnt job and could tell me just how they got it I would be immensely pleased.

I know the standard drill for finding the positions (USAjobs.com, state department FSO exams, etc...) but is there some inside knowledge that helps in landing one of these positions.

1. I'm in the same position.
I've heard the key is knowing someone. No shit. I kid you not.

2. The only person I really know is in Russia right now with the State Dept.
The only other way into the State is that God awful outdated and stupid pigeonholing FSO test. I've heard so many horror stories about that one...and have one of my own.

I love the written part questions: How the fuck is knowing which of 4 composers was not considered in the Baroque era important to working in the state department.

3. Well, that could have something to do with cultural undestanding...
Or it could just be on there to shake you up... The bit about the Baroque era of music, that is.

4. Absolutely
I worked for the Department of Education for 1 1/2 during the Clinton years. The only way I got the job was that I had friends there, and the boss basically hand picked me for a job. Granted, this was bottom level, so for a professional position I would hope they are a little bit more selective, but it REALLY helps to know someone.
