This position is a permanent, full-time position with the Center for
Forested Watershed Research with the duty station located in association
with the DOE Savannah River Site, New Ellenton, SC. The individual
will work with interdisciplinary teams to establish studies that address
critical questions related to optimizing forest productivity, with a
special emphasis on sustainable bioenergy production. Questions
include, but are not limited to, understanding the biology,
environmental impacts, and operational and application aspects of
intensive silvicultural practices. Biological studies focus on
understanding fundamental controls of growth and productivity.
Environmental impacts of short rotation silviculture are assessed with
respect to long-term site productivity, hydrology, and wildlife. Short
rotation silvicultural operations activities include pest control,
irrigation scheduling and nutrient management. Applications include
developing short rotation technologies and assessment tools for
bioenergy production. The Forest Service has recently built new offices
and laboratory facilities near the Site, in association with an
excellent field-based research site.

2. FIELD RESEARCH TECHNICIANS - vegetation - North Carolina

FIELD RESEARCH TECHNICIANS needed to assist with vegetation sampling for the Carolina Vegetation Survey.

Details:
Positions run from approximately Mid-May to September 2009 (although both the start and end dates are negotiable). We prefer a 10-12 week commitment, but would consider a 5-week hire and would also consider a hire as for long as 20 weeks.
Positions include spending several weeks of each month as a field assistant to one of our field researchers conducting a study of Carolina vegetation. Particular emphasis will be placed on sites along the coastal fringe and in the central Piedmont. When not in the field the assistant will be expected to work in the Plant Ecology Lab at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
Compensation is $10.00/hour. Housing and transportation will be provided for project-related travel.

Duties:
-Assist with field sampling of natural vegetation of the Carolinas. One assistant will focus on vegetation of the coastal fringe of the Carolinas, and one on vegetation of the central Piedmont near Chapel Hill.
-Record field data in Microsoft Excel and Access software.
-Additional lab duties may include soil sample preparation, identification of collected plant specimens, and logistics planning.

Requirements:
The most important criteria for an applicant are energy and enthusiasm for field work. The physical ability to work long hours outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of natural areas typical of North and South Carolina (not limited to heat, humidity, and biting/stinging insects) is necessary. Some training/interest in ecology, botany, environmental science or related fields is a plus. The qualified applicant should be able to follow protocols and be able to work independently as well as with a team. Familiarity with the waterways of the outer coastal plain, especially North Carolina, and familiarity with boating and/or kayaking is desirable, but not required. The ability to swim is required.
