Just saw "V For Vendetta". Wow!
WOW! :wow:

Has anybody else seen this amazing movie?

For those who haven't here's my very brief synopsis. It's an allegory combining every 9/11 conspiracy discussed on DU + many of the outrages against our civil liberties we are experiencing under * + a combo of Phantom of the Opera, Beauty and the Beast, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (but especially Phantom) + 1984's Big Brother + persecution of everyone who dissents and/or is unusual (e.g. gay or married to someone of another race). It's a very strange but stunning movie. For what it's worth, I highly recommend it.

1. Yeah, I liked it a lot too
Definitely some very subtle and not so subtle references to what's going on in the world today.

2. One obvious part was the poster of a swastika with the words
"coalition of the willing underneath". My husband almost choked on his popcorn when he read that.

7. I have to see it again for two reasons
Edited on Sat Apr-22-06 10:21 PM by Downtown Hound
Number one is to see all of the stuff like that that I'm sure I missed the first time (although I did catch the Coalition of the Willing/swastika thing).

Number two is, remember when Natalie Portman has been arrested and is getting all of her hair shaved off? Well, if memory serves, the guy doing that had no mask on. Could that in fact be the face of V, and the only time they show it? If so, very clever how they do that. The one time in the movie you get to see his face and you don't know you're looking at it.

11. LOL, exactly!
And there was his counterpart, who dared to present a spoof on the government 's ineptness. That guy symbolized all in the media who speak against the powers that be, no matter how benign their intents.

6. Yes, the really amazing thing is that it's survived!
YAY! Maybe enough people are starting to agree with the underlying premise.

8. It's still doing fantastic in the theatres (SPOILER WARNING!)
I caught Silent Hill yesterday and across the way was "V" and it had a pretty big crowd standing in line for it and the theatres we go to are in STRONG Republican town (amazingly we live in the middle of Tucson, Az.....but the closet theatre is actually well a town away)

There was nothing subtle about the messages...if that wasn't enough laying out the notion that the government murdered its own citizens to instill the kind of fear in them necessary to make them good little lemmings while the facists took over...and of course its outright stated that it is THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY that does it...

Yea anyone with a half a brain can watch this movie and know that the filmmakers are saying that this is what America is headed towards at warp speed-Christofacism.

5. The comic or graphic novel is great too,
A bit different than the movie but real good too. For 20.00 you can get the compiled series.

14. Go back to the original source...
... if you've never read a graphic novel, I would highly encourage you to read this, and then move on to Alan Moore's even better work 'The Watchmen.'

16. Yes, it was an amazing movie... ***spoilers***
(please don't read if you don't want to know the ending of "V")

...and I want to see it again, too.

It's been several weeks since I saw "V", but one of the main images that sticks with me is the sea of protesters at the end. I was so moved and saddened by that. It was inspiring to see such a massive group protesting. However, it made me wonder why we don't have massive protests like that.

I also enjoyed the journey that Portman's character took through the movie. She was living her life and doing ok--but she was paralyzed by fear. She didn't know it, but she was living half a life--as many people do. By imprisoning her, V helped Portman find her strength and courage again. He helped her go to some scary places and shed her fear.

Something else that got to me. The whole story about the lesbians was incredibly emotional. When they show the couple living together and happy--the voice over talks about how things got really bad, and they wanted to leave the country--but they just never did. I think about "leaving" all of the time. But I never do. Kinda makes you think!

I agree with the poster who said that the media mouthpiece was definitely Limbaugh. HA on him.

Great movie...you reminded me that I need to see it again!
