The Rubublicans failed to take New Orleans today!

Mayor's race: Nagin 39% and Landrieu 28% - run off.

Many thanks to all of the grass roots organizers, the NAACP, the local Democratic party, the antiwar movement, the Greens, and everyone else who helped keep the barbarians at the gate.

WHEW!

ONWARD!

6. Indeed. It was a must win.
I would be happy with either of these two guys or Rev, Watson.

There were some really dangerous nutjobs in the field.

They tried to rig this one too, but the people are catching on.

I don't think I am being stubborn, just confused. He just said it again, you guys need to get proof from him about his registration.

5.  nagin is a republican
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 12:26 AM by pitohui
actually if you were from the area, you would know that nagin is a lifelong republican who only switched his party affiliation to run for mayor of new orleans since only democrats can win there

in fact he supports george bush and he endorsed bobby jindal (r-fascist) in the governor's race against blanco, in case you were wondering why blanco and nagin can't get along, it's because he is not just a DINO, he is an out and out fake and not shy about putting forward the GOP agenda

so i don't think there is any "whew" abt it considering he was one of the top 3 candidates and indeed received the most votes

sorry to be a buzzkill but there is this little thing called fact i'm a bit picky abt

it's a disgrace that the man got any votes at all, he would do less harm if he went back to selling cable teevee

I think she is highly qualified and is doing a good job in the face of a terrible tragedy. Tell me please how she is not qualified? She has been in state government for over 20 years and I have always found her honest and forthcoming. She was Lt. Governor to Mike Foster, a republican, and obviously impressed him, as he refused to endorse the republican who ran against her in that race. I believe that was very telling. Why do you dislike her?

I'm pulling for Landrieu--I'll admit that. Still, it doesn't obscure the fact that Nagin was a Bush and Jindal supporter. Somethings in politics are unforgivable.

Because in Florida it is hard to tell the difference. Saying Nagin lied at the DNC meeting with Howard Dean sitting next to him is not so good.

It is possible to donate to both sides of the aisle. My whole family is Republican except me, I disagree with them but they are good people.

I have neighbors who are registered Democrats who preferred Bush because of his religious views. Now they are sorry, but they did.

Please drop the anecdotes and adress the post. Assertion was that he was a former Republican. Argument was that he wasn't, because he said it was "rumor" and that he "fudged facts."

He donated $1000 to Bush. What I find truly funny is that, in this case, people are trying to excuse that.

before he ran for mayor?

Are you going to keep avoiding the fact that he CONTRIBUTED $1000 (his only political contribution on record) to GW Bush and stumped for him BEFORE he was elected mayor, AND he stumped for Jindal AFTER he was elected mayor? Both are Republicans. Were those "lies," or "fudging fact?"

Has it ever crossed your mind that in NOLA a black Republican could never have been elected, but a black Democrat COULD?

62. I proved it. If you are too stubborn to read the links I posted...
From the citymayors.com link:

http://www.citymayors.com/mayors/new_orleans_mayor.html

More controversially, Nagin had actually been a registered Republican for most of his adult life, switching to the Democrats shortly before seeking office, for which his candidacy was branded as opportunistic in the solidly Democrat city.

And as late as December 2005 he considered himself a "former Republican."

Day to Day, November 17, 2005 · Former Republican businessman Ray Nagin became a Democrat and beat several other candidates to become the mayor of New Orleans in 2002. His post-Katrina performance has earned him both condemnation and praise. Susan Roesgen of member station WWNO profiles Nagin.

64. I remember some controversy about other candidates...
Would there be a way of getting records of his registration? The Clark supporters did that when he was said to be a former Republican. They found records.

Since he said it today on TV during a DNC meeting, perhaps you guys could write his office or a newspaper there and get him to clarify.

It would be easy to prove. I am not being stubborn. I remember the controversy about Clark, and mainstream media was saying it as well...but he was not really ever registered as one.

If he lied on TV, then you need to pursue it.

48. Those are donations. He did not say anything about donations.
He said he was never a Republican and you guys are saying he is a bold-faced liar. I think fair is fair. He could have donated and not been Republican.

63. Ok, you're just being stubborn and ignorant now...
of what I posted. Actually, above I posted snippets not only from an article at citymayors.com, but also from an NPR webpage.

Now, you find me something to prove that he was a Democrat when he donated to Bush. If you can't do that, my discussion with you is done, because I'm not going to belabor a point I've already proven when you continue to ignore your burden to prove he was a Democrat.

G'night.

65. No, if he lied on TV then it is the job of his constituents to prove it.
I just replied to your post above, as I had missed that statement. There are ways to look up registration, and those in his city should do that and make sure.

It is not stubbornness it is alarm that your sources say a mayor lied on TV. If it were my city, I would be on the phone Monday.

The show is re-airing on C-Span 1 at 2:31, just a few minutes.

47. His only political donation on open secrets is to Bush.
None to Democrats. NONE.

One can donate to Republican and not be one.

56. You do understand that we are talking about GEORGE FUCKING BUSH?
Not just some centrist Republican running for state legislature....we are talking about George W Bush.

Wow...if you excuse that, you've told me more about yourself than Nagin.

Ciao.

58. There is a difference in donating to and BEING a Republican.
If you think harshly of me for wanting the truth to be told, then that is your problem not mine.

Just show me where he was a Republican, and I will apologize.

It is wrong to call an elected official a liar without proof. I don't approve that he gave to Bush, but that does not make him a Republican.

59. Thank you - That's why I started the thread
If Ron Foreman were in the runoff, or, God forbid, the swine-like Peggy Wilson, we'd be having an entirely more depressing discussion this evening.

66. If the NPR interview is correct, then you guys need to do something.
If it is speculation, you need to prove it or have NPR prove it.

The show is coming up at 2:30 on C-SPAN...shortly. He is on fairly near the start.

76. So you heard it, too. Perhaps some could understand my frustration.
Instead of calling me ignorant, a fool, and stubborn. Not you,the others here.

When Clark was said to be a Republican, his supporters found the registration records. Since Nagin said this to the nation on TV, maybe some there could find more records.

I hate being called ignorant. I just hate being called names.

Thanks for watching and verifying.

i don't even get why you are arguing abt this, you make yourself look a fool to anyone who lives within 300 miles of new orleans

five minutes on google proves it if you don't accept the word of mere democrats

78. Don't call me hon. And the nation needs to know.
Maybe you guys could find the records like the Clark supporters did. Do not ever call me hon, and no, it was very believable today.

You guys were calling names, insulting all your leaders who have had the worst disaster ever in our history hit with the fool for president who wanted to take over the state.

Insulting me does not solve the problem you guys have that someone is lying...perhaps records of registration need to be found.

Did you just hear him on C-Span? Just now? Your city has a big problem, and records need to be found to prove it.

Yall do actually realize that Mitch Landrieu is a big time liberal Democrat.

Nagin was more of a moderate but with a foot in mouth problem who played on fears of a white mayor in New Orleans?

There is a runoff next month. Here's hopin'
