As Gas Prices Empty Pockets, Shelves Of Pawnshops Fill Up

TAMPA - Soaring gasoline prices are draining money from commuters' pockets and driving more people to buy gas on credit. But sometimes that credit isn't from VISA, MasterCard, or American Express.

Instead, some people appear to be turning to short-term credit from pawnshops to raise the cold cash they need for soaring gas prices. Shops such as All USA Pawn, Mr. Money Pawn & Gun Inc. and Capital Pawn say they are seeing an increase in traffic from people looking to finance their gasoline purchases through a pawn loan.

"They say, 'I've got to get to work because if I don't get to work I can't make the money for the gas,' " said Claudia Orme, the owner of All USA Pawn at 9001 N. Nebraska Ave. in Tampa. "It's people who don't ordinarily pawn."
