Fallwell is taking on the "liberal myths." How anyone can support this
man is beyond me. Everything is a myth spawned by liberals pro-abortionists including golbal warming. The only movies that win in Hollywood are those that glorify "terroists?" What movies is he talking about? He said especially this year's Oscars. Please don't flame me watching him. I just happend to pass his station and saw the footer "Learn more about Liberty University."

It's amazing that he has so many followers who even contribute to his fattening pockets.

1. And there will be more followers
The US is becoming dumber, by design IMHO, which along with the decimation of our future economy under the weight of Republican incurred debt virtually assures the US will be both a 2nd rate power in 30 years but also a superstitious and stupid one at that.

5. Our schools are failing.
Our State Universities are not as good as they once were according to studies. Observe some of the threads here for some of the errors in syntax and grammar. We don't wish to pay our best and brightest to educate our greatest asset, our young, this is the only natural result of such a system.

It would take the better part of two decades to realize the results of a substantial retooling of our public school system, which has been allowed to fail, through many years of inadequate funding which has resulted in overcrowded classrooms, overworked, underpaid teachers, dilapidated facilities, and all the other issues one would associate with an era of DELIBERATE neglect in hopes of making the entire system collapse.

I have actually heard a pig RepubliCON legislator state "What makes People think that they are entitled to a free public education?"

7. Having been a teacher in public schools for 30 years I agree
that the decline of the public school system is a contributing factor. But, ignorance is not the same as stupid. It seems to me that Americans are literally, biologically loosing intelligence as though their brains are being attacked by some neurological disease.

9. The brain disease is "fundamentalism"
It thrives on ignorance and hatred. What subject did/do you teach? I'd guess not English ("loose" vs "lose") :hi:

11. I agree...
Some may argue this point, but when we live in a society that glorifies and overpays entertainers and athletes, over those that teach our children, and provide us health-care, meaning nurses and emergency health care folks, the median intelligence level is sure to fall.

18. Hence the renewed attack on 'Liberal' academia
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 03:41 PM by LiberalPartisan
There are 5000+ institutions of higher learning in the US and the Brownshirts want them all purged. Education is not valued to the Brownshirts but training is and that is the job of college - to train not to educate. And to top it off we have lizards like David Hororwitz writing such tripe as The Professors: The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America. Those golden day of Pre WW2 Germany are their model and their goal. Sickening.

6. I agree
Lots more.

As times get harder and Americans grow stupider, they'll be looking for scapegoats and heading for cultlike churches for simplistic answers. Those who aren't already convinced of "end times" that is-

3. Jerry F., Liberty University, and Thomas Road Baptist Church are
nothing more than another republican-PAC. Religion is incidental and is a bastardized version of what Jesus intended.

4. IMO people support Fallwell types because they can't think for themselves
They can understand a simple thing called distraction. They are so un street smart they don't see the slight of hand going on before their very eyes. The republicans and the far right know very well that even if the majority of Americans can see through their bullshit, there will always be enough of a percentage of the American public who can easily be so confused by side shows and fake issues they will never see their rights and even their very way of life taken away from them.

10. Everyone should read "The Messiah of Morris Avenue" by
Tony Hendra. I am an atheist but was intrigued by a review of this book and thought I would give it a read. I'm only a little over half way through but it takes on today's brand of religion head on and "preachers" like Falwell, Dobson, et al in particular. Brilliantly shows the complete hypocrisy of what these asswipes are spewing today.

The book is set sometime in the future when the godnazis have completely taken over the country. A simple man starts going around talking about love, kindness and God demanding us to take care of the poor, children, afflicted and that the godnazis are the least religious among us. This is the last thing the "leaders" will tolerate or allow and thus the battle begins. Can't wait to see how this come out.

The total hypocrisy of the books' religious leaders and their cult like followers is very apropos in the way the reichwing Talichristians would lead us today if we don't stop it now. Should be read aloud from every pulpit and maybe it would wake up the real die hards.

I don't put down anyone who has faith and religion, I admire their their convictions but if we don't stop this run away train of extremists we are going to become exactly like the country in this book.

12. Televangelism
Without that box in the living room, he'd be just another pompadoured ranter on a back road in Virginia.

I knew people who got sucked into that stuff, usually because either they were ill and bored or because their family lives were going to hell. They had little money, but every spare dime went to that fat bastard. There was nothing you could say to them to tell them they were being scammed.

It was weird.

13. There's one thing you must know about conservative christians...
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 10:07 AM by Jeff In Milwaukee
They're fucking morons.

All of them. Not some of them. Every last one of them. They don't understand the basic tenets of their own faith (Falwell himself said basically that "turn the other cheek" and "forgiveness" aren't part of his personal theology. They make up utter crap like "The Rapture" and then peddle it as though it's part of the Bible

Hint: It's not.

And these same astoundingly idiotic people think they (and only they) should be allowed to run the country and, God help us, decide how children should be taught in public schools. These slack-jawed, drooling morons think that they should decide the science curriculum and that generations of molecular geneticists and paleontologists should just keep quiet.

Conservative christians must be destroyed and their theology ripped out of the body politic, root and branch. Why? Because they'll do the same to you if given the opportunity. Bet on it.

14. Americans
If you ask me why Americans have taken a step back I would point to
a LARGE number in this country who spend one hour after another watching
Television ...

I saw a poll that showed Americans could not name any of the Amendments
but could name the cast members on the show called the Simpsons (and I
am guessing OJ is not one of the cast members)

16. I went to a Michael Shermer lecture recently.
He's the founder of the Skeptics Society. Someone asked him why religion has such a hold on America vs. other modern industrialized countries. His answer, "we have the best marketing." Religion is the least part of it. Selling and closing the deal makes the winner.

Marketing and advertising is based on making you dissatisfied with what you have and feeling a need for something better. If done "right" it is never-ending. Terrorism is the perfect pitch. Even better than the previous drug war. They can never be defeated. They are in our minds.
