Protocol gaffes mar presidential visit

President George W. Bush urged visiting Chinese president Hu Jintao (above) to speed up economic reforms in a meeting that was plagued by serious protocol gaffes. Mr Hu's response was lukewarm, though he did say China would "continue to take steps" to revalue its currency. US producers say the currency's low value is a barrier to exports to China and has added to the US trade deficit with Beijing.
The visit got off to a bad start after the Chinese national anthem was introduced as that of the "Republic of China", the official name for Taiwan, while Mr Hu's speech was interrupted by shouting from a protester from the outlawed Falun Gong meditation group.
