Women's reproductive rights
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 02:13 PM by serryjw
were the precursor for woman’s' rights in education and the workplace. How do professional female republicans justify that?

Important dates in history

1850 The first National Women's Rights Convention takes place in Worcester, Mass., attracting more than 1,000 participants. National conventions are held yearly (except for 1857) through 1860.

1890 The National Women Suffrage Association and the American Women Suffrage Association merge to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). As the movement's mainstream organization, NAWSA wages state-by-state campaigns to obtain voting rights for women.

1893 Colorado is the first state to adopt an amendment granting women the right to vote. (I'm proud!)

1916 Margaret Sanger opens the first U.S. birth-control clinic in Brooklyn, N.Y.

1920 Aug. 26
The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote

1921 Margaret Sanger founds the American Birth Control League, which evolves into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America in 1942.

The Food and Drug Administration approves birth control pills.

1963 June 10
Congress passes the Equal Pay Act, making it illegal for employers to pay a woman less than what a man would receive for the same job.

1964 At the same time it establishes the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to investigate complaints and impose penalties.

1967 Executive Order 11375 expands President Lyndon Johnson's affirmative action policy of 1965 to cover discrimination based on gender. As a result, federal agencies and contractors must take active measures to ensure that women as well as minorities enjoy the same educational and employment opportunities as white males

1972 Title IX, the enrollment of women in athletics programs and professional schools increases dramatically.

1973 As a result of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court establishes a woman's right to safe and legal abortion, overriding the anti-abortion laws of many states.

12. Barry "Mr. Conservative" Goldwater:
"I believe a woman has a right to an abortion. That's a decision that's up to the pregnant woman, not up to the pope or some do-gooders or the Religious Right."

3. You might want to add a note that although Colorado was the
first state to grant women suffrage, both Wyoming (1869) and Utah (1870) territories beat them to the punch when they wrote their Constitutions.

Might avoid a small "who was on first" debate . . .
:-)

11. I've never thought that the western states gave women
the vote because they were progressive -- with small populations (compared to the east) they needed the votes to assure some measure of representation in Congress!
Pretty much explains Wyoming and Utah (and Nevada, for that matter). Colorado (my home state, btw!) might have had a few progressives wandering around . . .

7. They don't know about it.
Many of the girls I knew in our evangelical college knew nothing at all of women's history. Not anything.

8. The 26 year old
(lawyer) daughter of my lifelong friend didn't either. That's why history always repeats it's self. We will loss ROE and the 25 year olds will have to fight to get it back again.

9. I hate to think you're right.
But I think you are. We will be losing our rights if we don't keep up the fight.

10. That's WHY a 27
year old Veteran from Iraq is our talking about the lies and distortions. The same thing that Kerry heard 35 years ago, Jonathan and 6 Generals are hearing today. "it's unpatriotic to oppose the war when we have troops over there." " Love it or leave it" It's all the same shit I heard when I was a kid watching friends die over in VietNam.

13. Justify? They live in a dreamworld with their fingers in their ears.
They just close their eyes (after being told to do so by their male dictator) and scream.
