Mount Democrat, Colorado (Dialup Warning)
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 02:30 PM by _ed_
Hi there,

I thought some folks on this site might get a kick out of this. Generally south of Breckenridge, Co, is a mountain named Mount Democrat. It's what we call a "14er" - a mountain that exceeds 14,000 feet. Colorado has 54 of them. Mt Democrat was named in response to an adjacent mountain being named Mt Lincoln, just after the Civil War, so it wasn't named for the modern Democratic Party. It's still a gorgeous mountain with a great name!

My climbing partner and I climbed and skied it last Friday. Here are a few photos:

My partner skinning as the sun rises behind us, creating a "sunrise line."

My partner, again, skinning above 13000 feet.

Time for the fun part - me about to start the ski down.

Me taking a break on the ski down

My partner again. This is what it's all about!

My partner jump-turning in a nice, steep chute:

Me enjoying some great corn snow.

Mount Democrat: The following photos were all taken on other days, from neighboring mountains.

1. Hell yeah!!
I LOVE skiing (and snowboarding too!). I went out to Utah two winters ago - 2 feet of powder for the first 3 days - it was the best skiing/boarding I had ever done in my life (I'm from NJ, so gimme a break!! - though I love Jay Peak - closest to out west conditions in the east). Anyway, it looked like a great day!

3. Right on
I'm moving to Utah this summer. The snow out there is epic. Glad you had a good trip out west. My partner (the other guy in the photos) used to work at Jay Peak when he was in high school.

take care

4. Thanks
I've got to get up to Oregon some day and climb. I've heard Mt Hood is a wicked ski descent.
