After nationally syndicated columnist and blogger Michelle Malkin posted the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of three members of Students Against War, they received a flood of obscene and harassing messages from around the country, including death threats. When a liberal Web site, in retaliation, published Malkin's cell phone number and home address, a full-blown blog war ensued.

"I am now forced to remove one of my children from school and move my family," Malkin wrote Thursday in an e-mail to the Sentinel.

Malkin accidently included her own personal details on an email list which was picked up by someone on it that did apparently not like her too much and that's how it went public.

She launched her personal information about herself BY herself.

Her refusal to remove these kids contact information was not from conviction, but from revenue.

And now her own life has been disrupted.

at least not criminal reckless endangerment. Morally she is a toad. But as a journalist printing information which she got through legal means she is on pretty firm legal ground. Journalists have a pretty wide leeway to print truthful information about public figures and that is what both sides here did. I think the lower burden of proof in a civil suit would make that case easier.

To give a somewhat similar example Chris Matthews falsely stated that a person had been threatening Kathleen Willey and Pat Buchanan's brother subsequently shot the person. Matthews has yet to be sued. That goes to show how hard it is to sue for this kind of behavior.

Rather than calling and speaking to them herself, which is what members of the press are supposed to use such releases for, Malkin published their personal information on her website, prompting her hordes of orcish mouth-breathers to brandish their pitchforks and inundate the unsuspecting students with death threats (some of which you can read here). When the students frantically called on Malkin to remove their numbers, she posted their contact information again.

The invaluable John Amato, who's got some video from the scene, gets it right. Malkin, he writes, "crosse the line of decency..the death threats are emanating from her blog and she knows it. Malkin understands the nature of the fear and outrage she causes. Will she take responsibility when somebody gets hurt?"

"When somebody gets hurt." It's not just somebody, though. Malkin has already done grievous harm to an idea. I went to UC Santa Cruz. It's entirely possible I was friends with some of those Malkin has placed in danger. It's a school filled with young, idealistic kids determined to save the world, feeling their way through uncertain thickets of ideology and unfamiliar collections of ideas, and naive about the dangers of direct political action outside a university's protected confines. That, after all, is what college is about -- providing a protected space for young adults to experiment, learn, try out ideas and identities. If they made a mistake attaching their home numbers to a press release, it's understandable -- forgive them father, they know not what they do.

I don't know if Malkin's intentions last week were fueled by hatred, her desire to bolster her blog readership, or to push her own agenda on others, but you don't attempt to ruin someone else's life
unless you're asking for someone to do the same to you in the future. That's how Karma works, and today she gave us a hard lesson to live by: treat others with respect, even when they don't agree with you.

I don't feel sorry for Malkin because she's old enough to take responsibility for her mischievious behavior. She posted contact information contained on a press release for the Students Against War organization at the UC Santa Cruz campus because she didn't agree with their stance on the Iraq War. When those students asked her to remove their information from her web site because of death threats and she refused, she lost any respect I had for her. In my opinion, she became another blogger trying to use the power of the Internet to punish those who don't agree with her.

The Internet is filled with people like that on both sides of the political landscape. It's not just people on conservative message boards who partake in this behavior. I've seen liberals do the same thing and it's shameful that we have to behave like there's an ongoing civil war based on ideology. This is not the Wild West. Bloggers like myself shouldn't be the outlaws or good guys in the eyes of readers. We should be free to express ourselves.

I'm afraid this incident will make other bloggers afraid to exercise their First Amendment right to free speech and walk away from their keyboards without sharing with us their amusing pictures, insightful observations, an essay they wrote for a college class, or some poetry they wrote in their youth for their sweetheart. That's too bad. Whether it's a conservative, a liberal, a published author or an aspiring writer, I'm a fan of good writing no matter where it comes from.

I'm certain incidents like this happen more often than we realize, and now that it's happened to a public figure maybe something good will come out of this mess.

With no impartial "big brother" to moderate this, then you have to put events into play to create a moderation, else the only one left standing with be the Malkins. What I think is reflected here, for it has already started, is people are coming to terms with how much shit they are willing to take. What is happing here is leveling the playing field. Restoring a balance of power if you will. She put them in jeopardy, now she is in jeopardy. It simple fairness; karma! I am applauding that restoration as well as calling for it in the future when provoked. It's like responding to a country that actually DID attack you vs. one that did not!
