Why Condi is a heroine to the right and Cynthia is being condemned.
Edited on Sun Apr-23-06 06:05 PM by BrklynLiberal
An article about a world view in which men rule -- what Lakoff calls the strict father paradigm. The father is the boss in the family, and by extension, George Bush is the boss in the country, the world. Family members are subject to the strict father's severe discipline, which they need in order to learn how to survive in the world. Besides meting out discipline, the father's job is to protect the famly members from the dangerous outside world. Especially older WHITE men.

Women who defy these rules are condemned. Women who abide by them are praised.

1. Because Condi is not "a threat" to old bloated white men ...
I have no doubt that if George or Dick asked her to get them a cup of coffee, she would not think twice. Condi, Laura and Harriet are soft spoken around Their Men.

2. Exactly! They appear so very grateful for what the men around them
have allowed them to accomplish. They never appear "aggressive" or want to take any credit for their own accomplishments.
I think Condi would wash *'s feet if he asked her to.

3. "Bloated" ... as in Fat?
I'm an old, fat, white man, and I'm probably on the White House Enemies List.

I'm also not particularly offended by the constant use of "fat" as a synonym for "evil". Fat is no more evil than dark skin, mullet haircuts, or menstruation. But its use as a derogatory epithet is out of control, and it's getting impossible to avoid.

18. Nice cover move
But I fail to see how greed also qualifies as a form of fat.

6. Yes, bloated
Of course. Everyone knows that fat people are lazy, stupid, usually white and old. Oh, and evil. Usually evil. Thin people, you see, are chic and wise and in every way superior to fat bloated white people.

And don't you forget it.

A friend of mine has been trying to bring attention to this.

Unsuccessfully, of course.

19. Relax. This isn't a personal issue.
The metaphorical use of FAT is EVIL (in Lakoff's style of metaphor-analysis) happens hundreds of times every week at DU. Sometimes, after a particularly egregious move on the part of Team Bush, it's used hundreds of times a day.

This is a particularly insidious form of bigotry because it flies right in under our radar, en masse. The idea of FAT is EVIL comes from the popular image of "Fatcats" (another Thomas Nast invention), which evolved in the 1800s, although the rich now tend to be skinny, since they can afford to eat the more-expensive, low-carbohydrate foods. (And cheap food is usually fattening.)

I bring it up not because of my own weight, but because it's like a constant background noise that never goes away. If you're not aware of it, it affects you anyway, but if you are aware of it, it's enough to drive you nuts.

20. Try being left-handed
Think about all the sinistral (bugga bugga We're all sinister?) and EVIL connotations of the term.

Methinks we are getting a little over-sensitive about "personality adjectives" morphing into the physical realm - myself included. :hi:

26. I started school overseas with a teacher from the country of India
My parents (who are both left handed) had to go to the school and have a meeting with both the principal and the teacher to get her to STOP making me switch hands to write.

I wonder if it is still a cultural taboo in India to write with the left hand?

Hum, never kept up with this country's development.

7. Well, they are her bosses.
I have a bunch of degrees, but I have a boss. If she asked me to get her a cup of coffee, you better believe I'd ask how she takes it. But she's too classy to do that.

9. You're a real trouble maker ...
What? Now we have to outlaw even personality adjectives.

When one is bloated, they are not well.

But oh, whatever. :wtf: over

She gives them their token "fix" so they don't look like the angry BIGOTS that we all know they are.
