David Gergen told CBC 's Peter Mansbridge "Iraq is a mess".
Edited on Mon Apr-24-06 12:49 AM by glarius
I watched an interview tonight by Mansbridge with Gergen and was struck (once again) by the fact that it sounded different from what I hear on American TV. I just thought I would post this because I have noticed the difference in what is said on CNN or American networks by American political figures and what these same people say on CBC. Perhaps because they don't think Americans will ever know what they have said to CBC?...

1. If Iraq had wanted democracy, they would have fought for it.
Look at Nepal. W is making an ass out of himself and murdering our troops. If the Iraqis wanted democracy, they would have fought for it.

2. Of course...no form of government can be imposed from outside.
All countries decide within themselves what form of government they want. If they want democracy it will come as a result of the people's uprising. Especially is it wrong to try to impose something on these countries (like Iraq) which have centuries of tradition behind them.

5. He more or less said that Bush is finished unless something extreme
happens to turn things around. He said people no longer believe what he says and that his latest try at speech making to convince them he was on the right track did NOT work.

4. bush almost got away with stealing Iraq from the Iraqis
The problem was that they counted on them all being just a docile with him as they were with Saddam.

14. I think you are right about that.
Perhaps the Iraqi's understood that a strong thug like Saddam kept the warring factions under control. Iraqi's have always had plenty of guns. If they had that much hate for Saddam, I'd have thought an assassination would have occurred. Maybe many wished it, but perhaps they also realized that it would have opened a Pandora's box musch worse than they tyrant they knew. I guess we can see some justification in their thinking, based on what we have wrought on their country.

Along with the missing WMD, did we ever find all of those unmarked graves of the hundreds of thousands he had murdered?

15. Seems to me that they recovered a few hundred bodies.

And that was done with haste at the beginning of the US colonization in 2003 as reinforcing propaganda.

They have gone silent about the possible whereabouts of the other hundreds of thousands, probably because they don't exist.

6. Gergen has been saying this same thing on CNn for a while now.
I sure don't always agree with David, but he's always been a reasonable and fairly honest man. I remember even during Clinton's problems, David would say things like, "he should just call a press conference and just explaine everything. The American people are very forgiving of a repentant guy." He never joined the screaming crowd wanting Clinton's head!

He's also been very clear that he things Shrub is toast!

7. I don't think he's been as definite about it as he was on CBC....He seemed
to leave an out for Bush (IMO) on CNN, although I do agree he seems a decent person.

9. Probably
Or they might not care that CBC bleeds over into portions of several northern states. The number of Americans who actually tune into CBC if they can is probably very small.

But of course Iraq is a huge mess. I think most Americans know that without reporters coming out and saying it, they just don't understand why. We sure aren't being told the truth about that either.

Between the ethnic and religious turf wars that are being fanned by the political power grabs of Iraq's government officials (with US blessings) and the general despondency with being occupied by foreigners who could give two shits about them and what they want, Iraqis are living in a pit of hell whose boundaries far exceed those imposed by Hussein -- thanks to George W. Bush**.

12. And here we thought that Gergen was a
idiot. Of course, this is clear to anyone with an iota of intelligence. But as the saying goes,"common sense isn't common".
