The Bush=Hitler arguments that rage on DU will go on. And that's healthy.

The fact that this argument is taking place at all demonstrates that we have actually learned from history and are trying to avoid repeating it.

George W. Bush is as self-unaware as a person can be. IMO, he himself doesn't realize what his actions have done to this country, or where they would lead if he could carry out all his fantasies.

But this posting isn't about Bush, it's about us. We saw what happened when a madman gained total power and many feel it is happening again. That awareness and fear is our greatest protection.

Some think that today's America is the equivalent of Germany in the late 1930s. Others scoff at any such comparison. My own belief is that today, Bush is only a potential Hitler-in-an-Uncle-Sam-suit. Given the right circumstances, our country could conceivably slide into the abyss of totalitarianism.

But as inadequate as our checks and balances seem at the moment, it looks like they're kicking in. Republicans are terrified about this year's elections. I believe that the outcome this November will determine our destiny for decades to come. The Dems taking back either house of congress would castrate our potential dictator.

1. But will the Dems do anything if the voting machines are
clearly rigged?

7. I wish I had the answer to that.
If they steal another one, "Taking to the streets" with Bush in the White House would be suicide. He wouldn't hesitate to use the military, the police and everything else he has the power to use. It has the potential for an American "Tianemen Square."

All we can do is move to stop vote theft from happening beforehand, but I'm not even sure how we can effectively do so.

What do you suggest?

9. I suggest taking it to the street anyway
because they can't kill us all. And the whole world IS watching while we dither. We are at the point where we have to seriously ask ourselves whether or not this whole experiment in democracy is worth dying for.

3. Does Comparing Bush to Hitler make capturing the house easier or harder?
And, more to the point, should that matter?

I must admit I don't like the Hitler comparisons because they are a rhetorical trump card. The comparison shuts down discussion, and is often used in that way.

5. I sorta agree with you.......
when Democrats use the Hitler analogy repugs jump on the comparison issue and complicate the issue BUT among the sane, the Hitler analogy does strike a chord.....whatever it takes to keep or get us moving. So,I have just one admonition: Only use the Hitler thingie "among friends".

8. The fact that these discussions are even on this board
are proof enough for me that the comparison breaks down.
