Great News: Wal-Mart top employer in Arizona

As Arizona grows, so grows Wal-Mart.

The retail giant added 15 Supercenters, Sam's Clubs and Neighborhood Markets last year, adding 6,400 jobs. Its work force in Arizona grew nearly 10 percent during 2005, and more stores are on the way.

Whether you skip shopping at the boxy discount stores or embrace their low prices, you can't avoid the state's largest employer or its impact on Arizona's economy and its work force. Four out of 5 of us visited a Wal-Mart in the past year.

With 25,969 full-time equivalent jobs, the retailer has 6,000 more FTEs than second-largest employer Banner Health Systems. Wal-Mart has added 3,600 to 6,400 employees each year since 2002, when it ousted Honeywell from the top employer spot. Nationally, Wal-Mart is the top employer in 25 states, according to United Food and Commercial Workers, which funds an anti-Wal-Mart campaign.
Although the company will not disclose plans for 2006, Wal-Mart hires 350 to 500 employees each time it opens a Supercenter. It has done that three times so far this year. Neighborhood Markets typically have 80 workers, and Sam's Clubs have 170.
