at least for those of us who live in the great state of Mississippi </sarcasm>
Confederate Memorial Day
Yes, I'm absolutely serious. Mississippi has a state holiday called "Confederate Memorial Day"
Hey..aren't we supposed to be proving we aren't just a bunch of inbred redneck hicks? Thanks Mississippi state legislature for making Confederate Memorial Day a statewide get-off-of-work holiday! :-D

there's a holiday celebrating the heritage of slavery. Is it 2006 or 1906?

2. It is even worse than that |
|
On MLK day you do get the day off but you can choose if it is MLK day or Robert E Lee's birth day.

Thats crazy. The only reason I know about Confederate Memorial Day is because my mom used to work for state government and they got the day off.
and to marmar (I'm too lazy to make another reply post)...yeah really. Its a wonder Mississippi doesnt elect more democrats to congress...considering the large black (mainly democratic) population.

7. As recently as 1997 it was true |
|
It was listed precisely that way on our official list of days off. Teachers down there were defacto state employees so we had many of the same days off they did.

But for the racists to be celebrating Robert E Lee is odd..because it seems the Klan (and a bunch of those "Southern Heritage" hate groups) have abandoned the more moderate Lee in favor of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a more radical Confederate general and one of the founders of the KKK ("imperial wizard"...and by the way, who the fuck comes up with those insane titles?)

10. It apparently was a compromise |
|
In order to get conservatives whites to vote for MLK day they had to combine it with Lee.

8. Yup, the day we "lost" the civil war |
|
I mean, really, what did we gain by keeping the union together?
I would invite all progressives to move out of the south and tell all of the neocons and fundies to move TO the south.
Then we declare that a mistake was made and the south really DID win the war between the states.
And they can't have any more of our tax money. Or a nuclear military (using the same logic that governs our treatment of Iran).
And they can have (or keep) the entire BFEE and their ilk (and Cheney too).

11. I honestly feel the same way. |
|
The Confederacy would have fallen apart on it's own within 20 years and begged for the Union to annex them back.
Although it would have been averted altogether if the Bill of Rights abolished slavery like it was supposed to.
