Why do people think Osama tapes help *?
All it does is remind folks that * neglected to catch him and apparently, in his own words, "doesn't think about him very much", and really just "doesn't care" about catching him much. Thankfully, the media keeps playing the clip of him saying this and it's devastating, politically, imo. Democrats keep hammering away about how our military had him cornered in Toro Boro and * called off the hunt. The bushies NEVER deny this, and it's one of the reasons their poll numbers are in the toilet.

I think that every time Osama makes one of his evil incarnate appearances, it may scare people, but then they start to considered WHY he's still able to flaunt his agenda for all the world to see. If the great white hope had done his job, we would have avenged the victims of 9/11 by destroying it's REAL perpetrator, instead of somebody * had a personal grudge against, but who had NOTHING to do with 9/11.

11. Read any number of posts on DU
which talk about the coincidence (not) of an Osama tape surfacing when *'s poll #'s are in the tank. The implication, said and unsaid, is that this will help him. I don't buy it. I've posted this logic before and have been roundly attacked for being naive. Now, the opinion trend on this thread at least, seems to reaffirm my long held belief that not catching OBL was the biggest mistake of this misadministration.

14. oh no, YOUR logic is functioning properly, its the freeper illogic that
makes the equation work: osama tape = bush poll boost.

it makes no sense but, that's in a nutshell the problem with his base. They don't employ nor understand basic logic.

17. What % of the population are freepers?
Seems like a lot to us cause we deal with them constantly. I don't think such total fools account for a large number of Americans though.

22. Exactly...
Even people who were rabidly for this idiot started to notice that usama had a habit of surfacing EVERY TIME bush started circling the drain. You would have to be incredibly retarded not to see what has come to be something so predictable. I remember that one of the bushbots I know acted as if he's discovered a pod person when he realised that the so called colour coded alerts were almost unilaterally tied to times when bush found himself falling during the last presidential election cycle. He also was disgusted when usama just "happened" to appear the day before Election day. He voted for the idiot anyway and within 1 month, actually came to me and said he was so sorry that this idiot was back in office but that he thought that there'd be such an overwhelming vote against him, he'd never win.

Now why he voted for chimpy after seeing the transparent use of terror to further his agenda, Ill never know nor understand because he's never been able to explain it without sounding like a pure asylum escapee on crack.

2. You are making the assumption
that the people who buy into it are informed folks. Those of us in the know see the tapes as a reminder of everything you said, but for those head in the sand Bush supporters it reinforces the fear that leads them to put their trust in that idiot.

5. Yes this is the argument
But I also think that even among those who don't follow this stuff closely, they've reached a point of diminishing returns. The tapes can't pack the punch they once did.

Plus, frankly, isn't tapes kind of in the stone age? If UBL wants to improve his image he should consider trading up to the DVD - it's more modern.

3. You're right MPR
Many people's reactions on DU to these OBL tapes are very unsophisticated readings of the politics of the thing.

You can focus on the fear factor, or you can focus on the incompetence factor.

7. Blue rings the bell. Absolutely true.
It is portrayed that way because every bit of bad news in the past, had it been viewed honestly, would have destroyed this evil cabal years ago. Instead, the MSM managed to install a few jumps in his popularity. Well, crying wolf, or blitzer, or Timmy only gets you so far. After a while the constant drip of fuck ups, screw ups, lies and shear gall begins to take its toll. This time, bin Laden's appearance will hurt, not help the presican't. He wears no clothes and has appeared naked too many times in public.

8. I was watching an indie expert analyze it.
he made some startling and logical conclusions, and came away with the conviction that it was legit. White noise was used to mask the location from ambient noise ID, compression technology was used to further mask it, but, the patterns, the voice print and the stlye of speaking was his.

9. I think he's dead and thats why Bush doesn't spend much time on him
but his memory, kept alive appropriately, can be used to Bush's advantage (or so Rove thinks)

19. He's not dead -
he's holed up somewhere on a CIA payroll, to be conveniently rolled out every time the Bushies get their ass in a crack. Of course Bush doesn't care about catching him... why worry about a Friend and an asset..

10. You are correct.
I often talk about how, in any political/social situation, there are three groups: those who always agree with you; those who never do; and the undecided. In terms of Usama bin Laden tapes, Bush will only "benefit" in the sense that those who already are firmly in his camp will see the tapes as "proof" we benefit from having him as president. That group has shrunk considerably in the time since November 2004.

The group who always opposes Bush will not be inclined to change their minds because of a bin Laden tape. That includes those who mistakenly believe that bin Laden is a CIA/Bush family production, as well as those who understand and appreciate the tensions between the radical Muslim community in the Middle East, and the USA/Israel.

But the key to your post is found in that third group, which supported Bush after 9-11, and gave him the benefit of the doubt on Iraq. The guy has since been exposed as dishonest to the core. He is also seen as incompetent. Thus, unlike the tape that surfaced shortly before the 2004 election, which resulted in a significant amount of group #3 voting for Bush, today these tapes highlight Bush's weaknesses as president.

12. Two ways:
1.) By creating a "credible" delivery system for the Iranian nukes. e.g. "Why should we care if Iran has nukes?"

2.) By providing a "credible" agent for the next terror attack here.

15. Yes, but people are noticing that * hasn't caught him.
This doesn't make my gut feel any safer. I'd probably be a lot more afraid if I were an out of the loop ignoramous, who just knows that the evil mastermind of 9/11 is still out there thanks to *'s incompetence.

war in the entire Middle/Near East if there was a large terror attack here? e.g. "We haven't been able to chase him because he hides in Iran and/or Kashmir. Well, NOW we'll hunt him where ever he goes!"

16. I've no idea whatsoever
they're not even catchy tunes.

Delays in attempting to identify whether or not they are genuine crack me up. I've mentioned before - in the UK if you dial 2580 on a mobile and hold it up to some music which may be new to you you get a text less than a minute later telling you not only the title but who's version it is. Fist time I did it was on an obscure Artie Shaw track.

21. * will never catch OBL
If he was ever caught, * would lose his boogeyman. I suspect that * and OBL communicate on a regular basis and I also suspect that OBL is on the * payroll. I even think there is a special production company that produces the OBL tapes whenever * needs one.
