Poll question: I'm curious what DU'ers are paying for gas, which grade & where?
Cost me $3.19 for mid-grade at a Chevron station this morning in suburban Sacramento. Ughh.

Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 11:28 AM by CountAllVotes
and I was earning a little over $8.00 an hour and the job was part time (20 hrs. a week; if I was lucky enough to get more hours they gave me "compensatory time off" - no money). Paycheck for an entire month was $707.00 after deductions!

There are a hell of a lot of people here in the USA that don't even make that much and still have long commutes. It is literally *killing* the working poor!

23. What part of that is taxes
and what is done with the tax money? I'll bet that the UK is paying the about the same per gallon as we in the US are without factoring in taxes. Also, wonder if you have any train or bus service in your neighborhood.

39. Ah, those taxes are why you have those trains and busses.
Interesting, isn't it? Although I live in a very "busy" suburban area with a major shopping mall and many stores and restaurants within 3 miles, the nearest bus stop (for local busses) is 1-1/2 miles away and the nearest long-distance bus stop is 8 miles away. The nearest train stop (and the trains only go north and south along the coastal cities), is 5 miles away. I live in an area that, comparatively speaking for the US, is rich with trains and busses. You can see that if you are disabled or elderly in the US, it is not an easy thing to get where you need to go without a car.

As I was just telling my husband last night - you get what you pay for. Our government (which we, of course and unfortunately, elected) has not seen fit to provide the infrastructure necessary for traveling, other than for automobiles. Even then, a lot of our roads and bridges are crumbling. In the entire country, outside of cities, many, many areas are not served by any kind of public transportion. Without our cars, we are stuck. Period.

P.S. Wales is one place I'd like to visit some day. Some of my ancestors, way back, came to the US from Wales by way of Ireland in the 1600s. The name was Vaughn. From the photos and films I've seen, that's a lovely country you have.

58. If you mean the high taxes make people use public transport instead, yes
The money taken in from fuel taxes far outweighs the subsidies for transport.

# Public subsidy support for buses in England outside London currently cost about £1,100 million a year
# Public subsidy for rail is broadly similar even though the bus carries about five times the number of passengers and delivers far greater social inclusion benefits

http://www.cfit.gov.uk/factsheets/13/index.htm

# Fuel duties collected by Customs in 2002-2003 amounted to £22.1 billion, and they are predicted to amount to £22.8 billion in 2003-2004 and £24.4 billion in 2004-2005.

http://www.politics.co.uk/issue-briefs/road-fuel-duties-$3320486.htm

So public transport subsidies are about a tenth of the fuel duty. UK Fuel taxes are about two thirds of the price - so the subsidy is about one fifteenth of $6.40, or 40 cents.

59. What does the rest
go for, I wonder? The taxes must be used for other services. Actually, I imagine that once public transportion is widely available and convient, that increases usage and income from fares, so after the initial investment, not so much is needed.

60. There's no hypothecation, it just goes in to a central pot
The duty was raised above inflation each year during most of the 90s (it was called the 'fuel escalator') specifically to discourage car use. When prices hit about the equivalent of $6 a gallon in 2000, truck drivers blockaded the refineries until the government stopped that, and decreased the tax slightly. Since then, the duty hasn't gone up much.

I drive very little too. I gassed up last week at Costco for $3.03 a gallon. I won't be needing gasoline for at least another few weeks luckily. I don't see how the hell people working crap jobs that have long commutes (my former situation years ago) can make a go of it. I would have likely had quit that job by now ($8 an hour @ 20 hrs. a week). :(

25. Less than $2 per gal....We have a grocery chain fuel perks in Pittsburgh
You get 10 cents off per $50 purchase. Get $300 worth of groceries...get 60 cents off per gal.

This includes groceries, dry cleaning, prescriptions, movie rentals, gift card purchases...basically anything you can get in these large grocery stores except milk products and tobacco.

If you have a family to feed plus consistent dry cleaning bills, it doesn't take long to accumulate 50--80--or even $1+ off per gal.

It's a GREAT deal and since it's a real break for the entire middle class, I'm sure some a**hole politician will find a way to stop this program...until then, I'm taking full advantage.

up here in the sticks of N. California. At that time, most stations were $3.14 for regular unleaded so when I saw that $3.04, I made a u-turn and gassed up.

But, for the purposes of this poll, I checked $3.20 for regular unleaded because that is the price I would pay if I had to fill up today.

107. Very nice, but not for everyone
The advantage I have is that I live in a major urban area (Seattle, if that wasn't obvious.) Within a 1.5 mile radius (a comfortable 30 minute walk for me), I have:

* my place of employment
* 3 large, major chain supermarkets
* a farmers' market (in season)
* the much larger (and more distant) Pike Place Market
* the downtown retail core
* more than three dozen restaurants, ranging from casual to informal to dressy
* about a third of the city's movie screens
* stops for about half the city's buses for when I need to travel beyond my walking radius

And various other amenities. :hi:

All in all, I am very lucky about where I live; going without a car would be much more difficult if I lived elsewhere.

34. Why oh WHY are you buying mid-grade?
It's not "better for your car". It's a marketing scam by oil companies.

Fact: most cars are made to run on regular gas. Those models that require premium say so. No cars are made to run on mid-grade.

Sorry if I jumped down your throat there. I thought you were one of those "giving my car a treat" people. I shoulda known that smarter people are on DU :hi: I certainly understand the need to compromi$e!

Since your manual calls for premium, checking out the effects of using midgrade is indeed a good idea (although with 157K miles, it might be a moot point!).

For advice, might I suggest the forum feature on edmunds.com. Moderated forum, and lotsa helpful folks there. I've gotten some really good advice on my Honda there. BMW forum is here: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/ed_displayMakeRelatedDiscussions!make=BMW

50. Keep us posted
My car calls for premium, too. It will burn regular, but I can feel the difference, and I can see the difference in fuel economy .. I lose about 1.5 mpg with regular (that's calculated. I've recorded nearly every drop of fuel that's gone in the tank over 55,000 miles)

OTOH, at a .20/gallon difference, when the price is over $3.00, the difference between a tank of regular, and a tank of premium isn't that much. (just 3-4 dollars)

Over on a Scion board (Scions burn regular) a participant is experimenting with premium to see if there is any affect. The hypothesis is that with electronic ignition, and fuel injection, having the higher octane will allow the computer to advance the spark timing more that it could with regular fuel. Advancing the spark timing could possibly (possibly .. that's what he's testing) increase fuel economy.

Got any links on what it takes to convert?

What about the storage in the vehicle? Did the $100 include a new tank? Where's it mounted?

How available is propane in your area?

I know that propane is cleaner burning than gasoline, but I don't think there's as much energy per unit volume (ie, you've got to burn more for the same power) That last, though, is a vague recollection, and could certainly be way off base.

I needed to fill up today, and didn't. My fuel light came on as I left the grocery store (close to home thank goodness). I have 1/8 tank to last until I fill up again. I was hoping with the few pathetic changes coming in today, that tomorrow the gas will be cheaper.

My DH takes the train into the city, but he still has to drive to the next town to catch the train. Unfortunately we don't have any buses out here. If it wasn't raining, I would have taken my bike to the store with the baby on the trailer. DH and I rode up there the week before last and did that. I think I could probably get 5-6 bags in the trailer w/the baby. There's a net section in the back just for storage. I'm beginning to think that my new bike and trailor will probably be the best investment we made this year!
