One member of Congress, Rep. Charles H. Taylor (R-N.C.), has blocked a $10 million request to buy the land for a permanent memorial to the 40 passengers and crew members who overpowered hijackers bent on crashing their jet into the Capitol or the White House, for three years, that field has made do with a makeshift monument. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12454358/

imagine how much more meaningful it would be to have that $50 million, and donate it to Penn State to establish an institute for alternative energy studies? or the Flight 93 Professorship of Conflict Resolution? in 30 years, the monument will join all the other underfunded, undercared for monuments in the US. We love our monuments to the past, but we rarely remember what they stand for.

did you know that there are more official monuments in DC than in London? DC's been around for 200 years, London for 2000. (well, 1000 as a real city). what's with the obsession?
