I am thinking of trying to get my almost 19 year old out of here. If the draft comes it is the 19 year olds that go first.

1. No, when the draft comes it's the 20 year olds who go first.
If you want you could try to get him into a Canadian university like I did, but I think Canada said they won't accept draft dodgers this time around. There's some new treaty against it. Good thing I'm not trying to hide anyway.

13. Oh, life's great, except for the deranged marking scheme
which is raining on my Canadian-American parade. Why, why did nobody tell me how hard it is to get even an A- here? Otherwise things are pretty good. In all fairness, I can't complain about my grades, and I guess all the A-s I get probably mean more than a whole cohort of Harvard grads leaving their institution with 3.9 GPAs thanks to grade inflation.

Of course, it's exam time. Everybody's stressed. I, OTOH, have one exam that's practically pointless to study for, and another where I think I'll do ok without a whole lot of hard-core cramming. Were the grades this bad when you were here?

Lastly, it pisses me off that all you cool cats of generations past got catchy designators that make sense, like how 9T2 reads "Ninety-two". OT7 sounds like that scientology thing. Sad.

17. Scientology! LOL...
yup, you can be an OT7 with Tom Cruise :)

Yeah, grades were always tough for me. I was in the physics program with all these hyper smart engineering science students. Of course, I spent far too much time at the Madison, too.

Best of luck on your exams :)

18. Believe it or not,
most people I know consider the Maddy to be too far away! I can't tell you how some people are still mourning the loss of the Bedford Ballroom. It was overpriced, but at least the atmosphere was pretty good.

And furthermore, at least in physics it's possible for everyone to get the right answer. In history and poli sci, we're all just graded against the rest of the class. Ugh... I had one prof admit to me that the scale really *does* begin at 85% and not 100%, and that anything over 85% should be considered extra credit. That means that to get an A, not an A-, you have to get what amounts to the maximum score on every assignment, all year long. Bloody near impossible.

stampede of folks leaving the country when the draft comes down, most with kids 18-25. You'll be in good company. Or, with any luck, we will have deposed the current regime by then.

3. I'm Not Sure But,
A friend of mine, his son graduated from the University of Vancouver, I think that is the name of it?? If you look on their website, they take on a lot of foreign students, who pay a lot more than the Canadian ones but SOOO MUCH LESS THAN COLLEGE TUITION HERE! It's something like $8,000 a year or something....almost what we pay for Catholic high school here in Los Angeles.

Canada may not be a bad spot to be when all the Bush crap hits the fan for real.

Re Tuition for foreign students
http://www.ece.ubc.ca/~gradsec/FAQ.html

How much are tuition fees?

Full-time graduate tuition fees for Canadians and Permanent Canadian Residents are currently (as of June 2005) $3712 annually for full-time students. Yearly tuition for the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. programs are approximately $7,200 CDN per year for foreign students. International MASc students are eligible for an International Partial Tuition Scholarship of $3,488, which is applied to assist with their tuition fees. PhD students who are not receiving funding from an outside agency like their university, government or employers, are currently being offered a full tuition scholarship of $7,200. 5. Why not let him go where he wants to go to school?
The chances of a draft happening are very remote.

6. Very remote, IMO
The nation will not stand for it. You have a combo of parents who despised the draft in their youth and kids who will just say no. Anyone voting for a draft will lose their next election even if their opponent was Vlad the Impaler.

11. I'm not quite sure what difference it would make anyway...
He'd still be a US citizen.

But regardless, sending him to a school overseas just to avoid a draft that is not likely to happen seems a little extreme.

7. So what happens if Bush nukes Iran?
Do you think he is going to pull our soldiers out of Iraq and Afghanistan BEFORE he does it?
What do you suppose will happen to a majority of those soldiers?
If you haven't figured out, the military is a disposable asset to Bush.
Just like everything else in his life...you use it up...you get some more.
No big deal.

14. If he's interested in studying abroad,
there are a variety of options from direct enrollment to attending through a program offered by a U.S. school.
Here's a starting place for more info:

15. Are we still panicking about a fictional draft?
These topic has been in endless repeats since 2002. And we are no closer to a draft today than we were then.

16. I wouldn't base a life decision on a pretty far stretched idea.
Bush doesn't have political capital or clout to start a draft, neither does Congress. Do whats really right for your son and find him a good affordable school which has a program he is interested and will provide him a good wage.
