*BOMBSHELL* One of the Bush Pioneers is NOW critical of Chimp!
First, a little background - I obtained this letter from a first-hand source, and she asked me to spread it as far as I can.

Jack Overstreet, lifelong Republican, is a Bush Pioneer, having donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Bush '00 and Bush '04, even contributed to his '04 Camapign as found here: http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_result.php?first=Jack&last=Overstreet&st= (He lives in Colorado and Wyoming respectively), a oil man himself, and everything else, just about the worst Republican you'd ever meet.

This is his letter to Ken Mehlman, Chairman of the RNC:

April 3, 2006

Chairman Ken Mehlman
Republican National Committee
310 First Street, S.E.
Washington, D.C. 20003

Dear Ken:

I enjoy the fun relationships with you, Dwight, the RNC staff, and fellow donors in the Eagles and Regents programs. I appreciated the honor of being appointed one of the RNC Eagles co-chairmen. As you know, I’ve written a check every time I’ve been asked by you or others in the leadership – ranging from giving to gubernatorial candidates I don’t even know, to contributing the cumulative legal maximum to federal candidates the last couple of cycles, and to being a Regent, Super-Ranger, and $100,000 “Sponsor” of the Inauguration.

I’ve observed that the RNC is basically a creature of the Bush Administration at this time, i.e. we seem to be expected to sing from the same hymnal as the President on virtually every issue. While I hope it will prove “worth it”, I don’t think I’m alone in the major donor community feeling disappointed that Iraq took on such a singular priority on our watch to the near exclusion of other issues. And, I have never really gotten over the blow to my confidence caused by the nomination of Harriet Miers – I think the polls started dropping then since many likewise saw it as a case of inexplicably poor judgment, and wondered how that case might relate to decision-making in general.

I believe the Administration’s championship of a long-term “guest worker” plan is another poor decision for the country as well as for the Republican Party. Illegals are taking wages Americans won’t – not necessarily jobs they won’t do. Instead of providing leadership to enforce the laws and remove those here illegally over a reasonable period of time, and to support higher living wages for legitimate citizens, we are poised to permanently accept the costs financially and culturally of an unplanned, unassimilated mass of twelve to 20 million (and counting).

As to eventual citizenship for this number, one can expect such an underpaid, under-educated majority to subscribe to the entitlements culture; the significant political numbers are not the minority percentage gains our party has ballyhooed in appealing to Hispanic votes, but rather the fact that we still net lose to the Democrats in this electoral group, particularly among the poor some of our businesses are so willing to underpay. Make no mistake – if these twelve million plus illegal entrants are allowed to stay under a guest worker program, they will eventually be offered citizenship. The Republican Party cannot make up for our net percentage deficit within the group by doing more “volume”, so this lack of courage now may cement the demise of the Party as a national contender within a fairly short period of time. I trust the Democrats have also done the math. As a party and a people, we would be a lot better off supporting higher living wages and opportunity for legal citizens – Hispanics and otherwise – than continuing this offensive, weak mantra about “doing jobs Americans won’t do”. Let wages rise, let the economy adjust, help millions go home through cutting off the employment, and address this issue as the President of the United States rather than like someone grubbing for votes in Texas.

As much as I would like to continue supporting the Party at this level, I can’t in good conscience write another $25,000 check at this time. So long as I have personal reservations, I can’t be effective asking others for money, so I need to resign as one of the Eagles chairs. I hope the President will reconsider his position on immigration reform. I look forward to supporting only candidates who will stand up for American sovereignty, and I hope to support the national Republican Party again when it is no longer aligned with only one Republican’s views.

Best regards,

Jack Overstreet

P.S. I hope you will pass along this note to Karl. I hate to see the electoral coalition you guys so remarkably assembled be destroyed as we wrap it up. The faulty position on “guest workers” is likely to create the unusual spectacle of our base not bothering to vote this fall, and it comes at a time when most of our supporters are pretty unimpressed with us in general. While I have never seen this President willingly modify any position once adopted, there’s always hope. Do you really understand the depth of the problem when check writing junkies like me…sober up?

It's just too convenient for conservatives. They'll turn on Bush, as if it's not really their ideology that's flawed, just his implementation. They're going to try and spread the meme that he's not conservative enough for them. I doubt that any of Bush's Pioneers are opposed to amnesty. The one that I know certainly is all for it.

The thing that tipped me off was the concern for the illegal immigrants, and the effect it's having on Americans.

Since when do Repubs care about Americans? Or any workers, for that matter? They would love it if we all became like those Egyptian workers that built the pyramids.....100 years at a time.

The grammar seems sketchy.

The jury is out on this one. (But; it's still juicy!)

Overstreet donates $100G to Bush's inauguration
The Denver Business Journal - December 21, 2004

Jack Overstreet, an Englewood oil and gas executive and among the most prolific fund raisers for the Republican Party and President George W. Bush, has donated $100,000 toward Bush's inauguration, according to the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

Overstreet is a partner in Legacy International Inc., based in Englewood.

Overstreet was on a list of "major" donors posted Dec. 16 on the committee's Web site. He joined energy industry executives and others around the country who gave anywhere from $25,000 to $250,000 to help pay for the inaugural ceremonies.

The Jan. 20 inauguration is estimated to cost between $30 million and $40 million, which private donations will cover.

Overstreet has personally donated more than $150,000 to the party and Republican candidates since 2001, according to Federal Election Commission records.

More at the link .... but not much more .......

70. Because illegals and Imigrants send home $20 billion a year,to Mexico
President Vicente Fox of Mexico calls the illegals "heroes," and well he should, because they send home $20 billion a year.:eyes: The number of Mexican-born in the U.S. population, believed to be 11 million now, is expected to double over the next quarter of a century. Mexico's economy, culture and political system depend on exporting Mexicans. Nobody really knows how long, if the current rate of illegal immigration accelerates, before more Mexicans will live here than in Mexico. It's merely a matter of time and arithmetic. A proposal in the Mexican Senate last year that would have kept migrants away from particularly dangerous border crossings when temperatures soared was denounced:grr: as doing the US's "dirty work".:grr: It was withdrawn.:kick:

83. and who sends the money to the workers who send it home to mexico?
oh, that's right, republican management and executives. and why do they do that? because they have formulated their business models on cheap, undocumented, labor because it's <drum roll> cheap and you don't have to treat them well because they have the "sword of damocles" of illegality hanging over them.

seems the republicans have a perfect system, right now - what with all this having the cake and eating it too.

92. WalMart had workers that were paid $2 a day
http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/2003-10-23-walmart-arrests_x.htm

excerpt:

The government's decision to go after Wal-Mart (WMT), the world's largest employer, underscored an aggressive and ongoing effort to enforce labor laws involving undocumented workers.

The workers from Eastern Europe, Central America and Asia, hired by contractors to fill cleaning crews, were arrested at 60 stores. Agents also hauled several boxes of documents from an executive's office at Wal-Mart headquarters. A sealed criminal complaint alleges that immigration violations took place with "direct knowledge" by Wal-Mart executives, according to Department of Homeland Security officials. Evidence includes taped conversations between Wal-Mart executives, they said.

<snip>

Though contract cleaning crews were the focus of the sweep, Williams said Friday that about 10 Wal-Mart associates in Arizona and Kentucky were among those arrested.

<snip>

The cleaning crews did not receive health insurance and were paid below the minimum wage, sometimes as little as $2 a day, a federal official said.

54. If this is actually true....it sounds like he does this for the camaraderie
I know Republicans who support the Republican party because it is like a social club. All their friends belong and they all like to talk about the latest from Faux news over cocktails. They don't really look below the surface and are invested in keeping it that way. Their "conventional wisdom" about the economy, immigration, wages and jobs, health insurance, etc. is bogus, if they stop believing it their world falls apart.

Overstreet is concerned about George, not the overall philosophy of the delusional GOP. I'm guessing he still wants to support a policy of drowning government in the bathtub. He does get the thing about Americans and jobs, they will do they work if it pays the bills.

"I enjoy the fun relationships with you, Dwight, the RNC staff, and fellow donors in the Eagles and Regents programs. I appreciated the honor of being appointed one of the RNC Eagles co-chairmen. As you know, I’ve written a check every time I’ve been asked by you or others in the leadership – ranging from giving to gubernatorial candidates I don’t even know, to contributing the cumulative legal maximum to federal candidates the last couple of cycles, and to being a Regent, Super-Ranger, and $100,000 “Sponsor” of the Inauguration."

:kick: Very typical rich Republican.Did you notice how very quick they are to distance themselves from their peers who are in trouble,or a scandal. Even if that person was 'like one of the family'.You can see a few examples of that right now, with Abranof, the guy from Enron and even with cheney and bush.Their bottom line is always money. They are the most apathetic, when it comes to others, who are down and out. The ones who grew up in the depression are the worse.:eyes: They have lived through poverty,so you would think they would have some empathy for the poor, but no,just the opposite. believing and acting that it is 'every person for himself or herself'.
Bussinesses and Corporations who believe they have no duty to care, will hire and fire at will and provide the minimum possible pay and benefits to keep the people they need.
They will ignore the plight of others. While at the same time take, all they can. If they can get away with it.Even if it is the Money or the shirt off of others backs..They tend to take the most advantage of the elderly. Always asking for donations even if that person doesn't have enough money for food and rent,or to pay their energy bills.Yep, sounds just like a Republcan to me... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd0xnBOzH6U&search=pink%20floyd%20money :kick:

67. I'm slightly in the legit camp on this one
One one level this sounds like the real deal. He's sincerely critical of the republican corporate culture, and sarcastic in ways that others wouldn't be if they weren't part of it.

It's like he's saying 'they're here because they'll take shit for pay, and we in our infinite wisdom are willing to accomodate them.' He also notices that republicans might be put off by a president (note: not 'our president' but he writes 'THIS president' sounds a bit strange to me) who makes a decision and sticks to it no matter what. I think only true republicans would care much about that issue. On this board, we'd hate Bush no matter what he did, and would be critical of him if he ever was to change his mind.

On the other hand, the warning in the end of others in the high donor camp 'sobering up' seems really clumsy, and seems slightly like our 'Bush is a drunk' discussions, and the whole thing about 'jobs Americans won't do' versus 'pay americans won't accept' seems a bit like our talking points.

103. I doubt EVERYTHING but this sounds legitimate
This sounds 100% legit. He is still concerned with keeping Republicans in power, and sounds like he will continue to donate once the immigration issues get settled to his satisfaction. He's not deserting the ship, just temporarily witholding funds (as many of us do all the time with the Dems, NPR, etc.) MANY of us have written similar letters to the DNC, NPR, our local committees, even DU.

I'm surprised something like this hasn't surfaced before - in spite of our perceptions that most Republicans are Morans, SOME of them have to have realized that their boy king is an idiot by now.

68. End "profiteering" by oil companies
Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell called upon President Bush to end "profiteering" by oil companies and to tap their record-breaking profits;:nopity: Rendell: Time right for windfall oil-profits tax

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell called upon President Bush to end "profiteering" by oil companies and to tap their record-breaking profits to provide relief to consumers.

"Consumers and businesses are trying to find ways to cope, but gasoline prices keep rising," Rendell said. "The president needs to act now. Oil companies should not be permitted to drain Americans' bank accounts to collect record-breaking profits."

In a letter to the president, Rendell urged Bush to work with Congress to establish a windfall oil-profits tax and direct the revenue gained through such a tax, as well as the billions of dollars in oil-royalty payments due to the federal government by oil companies, back to consumers and companies trying to make ends meet.

"Not only are gas prices spiking, across regions of my state it's getting harder to find gas," Rendell said in the letter to the president.

ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, ConocoPhillips, BP, Shell and Valero reported combined profits of $112 billion last year. Since Bush took office, the companies have accumulated profits of $321 billion, the Governor's Office said. In January, ExxonMobil reported the largest annual profit in U.S. corporate history -- $36.1 billion -- which included a record-setting fourth quarter. Exxon earned $10.7 billion, or $116 million every 24 hours, in the final quarter of last year. That final quarter, in the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita, represented a 27 percent increase from the same period one year earlier, the Governor's Office said. More...

73. I hadn't heard about this ... Waytago Russ Feingold!
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 04:30 PM by vickitulsa
NOTE: Edited to correct my short-term memory booboo: It wasn't Feingold but Governor Rendell who called for the windfall profits tax. Feingold's name in YOUR name threw me off... ;)

I just wrote in another thread that in all my three decades working in the "energy industry" (as they like to call it now), I've seen only one thing that really shakes up those in the corporate offices of Big Oil: WINDFALL PROFITS TAXES.

I didn't know Russ had addressed the current gas-price crisis with this move, but I'm elated to learn about it.

Americans find it hard to keep up with the fiscal smoke and mirrors efforts of the GOP, but they have heard about "windfall profits taxes" for a long time and at least vaguely understand the potential such taxes on Big Oil might have for actually HELPING them -- and soon enough to do some good.

When I read the letter, I saw it as authentic right from the start. The name "Jack Overstreet" sounded familiar to me, too, and then I remembered -- I encountered that name many times in lists of attendees at huge oil company gatherings. I can't recall what he looked like or even how old he is, but I suspect Overstreet is one of those guys who began as a wildcatter and was just a regular working slob before he hit it big and got richer than God.

The hallways of the Corporate Oil Elite are populated with fellas like this. In a way, I worry more about the dangers we face as their children inherit their wealth and power but without the down-to-earth background to temper their thinking and behavior.

I can't independently verify the letter, of course, but I can tell you that it reads VERY like the way I know many of these guys think. Notice that Overstreet in this letter was actually trying to put some pressure on the RNC and even the pResident (through Rove) to change course on at least the one issue that most bothered him by implying he would again start writing checks if he saw some improvement.

I believe this is a genuine artifact, and if in truth an employee of Overstreet's "leaked" it to Booberry, it's a move that reminds me very much of the sorts of things I did when I worked on the "inside"! :)

(Hey, when you're a "working stiff," you tend to take the best job you can get; and in Oklahoma, the best jobs for administrative or "support staff" have for a long time been in the oil and gas industry. Doesn't mean I support their activities or their politics in any way ... and in fact I have shared a lot of inside knowledge with others whenever I thought it might help.)

75. One thing about this letter bothers me
IF immigration were such a big deal for this guy to the point where he would write a letter like this, would he not then address the issue PRIOR to putting the ink to all them zeroes in the checkbook?

"Grubbing for votes in Texas"= the guy already knew their position on immigration?

So whats the guy saying? If I knew you were gonna pull this amnesty thing, I never woulda donated in the first place?

Maybe he's just stupid to point out the fact that he was blindly donating big bucks without checking out the goods, but I think most people in this position would have some sort of comment along the lines of: "when I spoke to you at the Wyoming shindig/fundraiser in Laramie you gave me your personal assurance that this administration would keep illegal immigration in check" Some sort of touch point like a big donor would have.

Color me skeptical
