Why is this a goverment conspiracy? The spelling of his name is transliterated from arabic which does not contain the american english alphabet. 'O' or 'U' is not that big of a deal. but it's particularly unlikely, especially when one considers that the FBI and Fox News -- perhaps the most rightwing of all mainstream media -- uses the Usama spelling.

Of course, Osama doesn't spell his name Usama OR Osama -- he spells it with Arabic writing and both of these names are simply phonetic translations. But pesky facts are so annoying when there's a good conspiracy to spruce up.

Arabic translations will vary. That's why you'll see the Koran or the Quran, Al-Queda or Al-Qaeda. Transliteration isn't always an exact science - w/a different alphabet, there's going to be different ways of spelling the translated word. And plus, according to this article, it's the FBI itself that uses "Usama" while the media uses "Osama." So if there's a conspiracy, the FBI apparantly isn't in on it.
