Goss was 'given instructions' to purge Democrats from the CIA

Goss was 'given instructions' to purge Democrats from the CIA

Now that Mary McCarthy has "categorically denied" disclosing classified information on Bush's secret prisons, the political debate shifts a bit. Instead of assuming that McCarthy was responsible for leaks, we now have to wonder why, exactly, CIA Director Porter Goss sacked a veteran intelligence analyst. It's too soon to say with any certainty whether Goss, who personally oversaw the investigation into this leak, was driven by partisan motivations, but there's reason to believe the director of central intelligence was not acting on principle. After all, McCarthy was a Democrat and hold-over from the Clinton years -- and Goss is a former House Republican who has tried to purge top-ranking CIA officials of anyone who wasn't loyal to Bush. Let's not forget this Newsday report from November 2004 and how it might apply to the McCarthy controversy.

The White House has ordered the new CIA director, Porter Goss, to purge the agency of officers believed to have been disloyal to President George W. Bush or of leaking damaging information to the media about the conduct of the Iraq war and the hunt for Osama bin Laden, according to knowledgeable sources. "The agency is being purged on instructions from the White House," said a former senior CIA official who maintains close ties to both the agency and to the White House. "Goss was given instructions ... to get rid of those soft leakers and liberal Democrats. The CIA is looked on by the White House as a hotbed of liberals and people who have been obstructing the president's agenda." (emphasis added)
And now we're supposed to believe that Goss, whose history of rigid partisanship is overwhelming, ran a fair and objective investigation of McCarthy? Please.

2. Catwoman, I spent some time yesterday asking why DU'ers just assumed
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 01:44 PM by cryingshame
she leaked any information. Further, even if she did communicate something to reporters, what proof has been shown it was CLASSIFIED info.

There is no proof she did anything wrong! All they say is she failed a polygraph test. What did they ask her?

Rather, she was ready for retirement after having her career stalled since refusing to blindly go along with the NeoCons.

Even the NYTimes was more sympathetic to her in their article then DU'ers.

When I said Keith hammered them I meant he was stressing how the Repubs had lied, or at the least wasn't telling the real story. For instance, Goss only says an agent, no name or sex. Covers their a-s. She is about to retire and they axe her instead, no hearing, etc. Hopefully Keith will go over it again today.

No Keith today! Is he gone already? hopefully just kidding.

7. The corporate media showed NO CONCERN when the Nov2004 purging of
anyone suspected of supporting Kerry was happening with their full knowledge.

They just didn't think the American people should be concerned or even know about it, so they didn't discuss it.

That was before Katrina and before Fitzgerald - the American people had to see the reality for themselves about BushInc because the corporate media was never going to tell them the truth.

No the republican party only cares about the republican party, does this admin really believe that a persons judgment is tied to their party affiliation? Can they really be so narrow minded to think in these terms, i can't determine if this is sad or scary. Maybe both!

15. The snakes in
the administration, and their co-snakes in various agencies, refuse to allow people the right to dissent. They believe they have the right to punish those who hold different opinions. And they feel justified in trying to destroy those who act upon their beliefs.

As I noted in my post (Leaks in Perception), the Cheneyites were shocked -- and outraged -- when the progressive democrats embraced Ambassador Joseph Wilson and his wife. For many years, they have been secure in their beliefs that the progressive people would automatically reject everyone from the intelligence community ..... because they have read about the executions of progressive people in the USA, and about the overthrow of sovereign countries in the '50s and '60s, and the rape and murder of nuns and priests in Central America in the '70s.

None of those crimes against humanity should be forgotten. But the blood is on the hands of those who ordered, participated in, and paid for those crimes. It's not fair to think that every member of the intelligence agency today shares in that guilt. Progressives are able to grasp the complexity in these matters.

Indeed, there is a power struggle taking place.

28. One of the things
that I notice when I listen to the generals talking is that they are careful not to sound like they are advocating a military control of the government. I've always thought that Ike's farewell address was among the most important speeches in American history, and I think the military-industrial complex has far too much power and influence in our society. But I think that these people are saying that there should be civilian control of the military -- but the Cheney "shadow government" and its side-kick, the Bush administration, represent a corporate control of the military. And our country is at a cross-roads unlike any other our people have ever confronted.

42. Yes.
Even a large number of intelligent people, who attempt to be informed on the issues of the day, and who care deeply for this country, have no idea what that "shadow government" is. I've had friends question if me about it, because they have not seen any reports on their cable news, or read any articles in the corporate newspapers, that make any mention of it. And they are shocked to see the shadow government described in a number of recent books by respected authors, including Senator Byrd.

30. Do you remember my point from back during the primary battles here?
Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 02:23 PM by blm
I would repeatedly point to whenever an intel person would leave and sign on with Kerry - they were already lining up back then for a battle between agents loyal to the United States and agents loyal to BushInc. I believe they sided with Kerry because they knew what he did in IranContra, BCCI and the CIA drugrunning cases and that he'd open those books that are relevant to what is happening today. BushInc could not stand under that exposure, but the good people at the agency would rise for their role.

I would say that the battle within the agency would shape up to be one of EPIC proportions on a historic level. Many thought I was being dramatic, but I knew I was stating a fact. I knew the purges would come because what was obvious to me was certainly obvious to the WH.

Disgusting that the corporate media will not share what is really happening with the American people. They know how big it is, but they downplay the real issues to keep the story contained and spun for BushInc.

Too bad the agents didn't know about machine fraud then. Guess only Bush loyalists are kept in that loop.

Edited on Tue Apr-25-06 02:06 PM by BrklynLiberal

On October 20, 1973, in an event termed the Saturday Night Massacre, U.S. President Richard Nixon ordered Cox fired, due to Cox's insistence on obtaining secret White House tapes. Rather than comply with this order, both Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus resigned. The order was ultimately carried out by the Solicitor General, Robert Bork. Upon being fired, Cox stated simply:

Whether ours shall be a government of laws and not of men is now for Congress and ultimately the American people.

He should have been blocked when he was first put forward. There are only a few people Bush could have tapped for this position from his inner circle, and Goss was by far the most dangerous and effective. People matter - if Goss's appointment had been denied, Bush wouldn't have had anyone close to his capability to put in this position.

Now we are all enjoying the consequences. Maybe next time, Dems will be strong and stand their ground.

say that this woman is being scape-goated to assert Goss' control over the agency, to discourage leaks and tell-alls, and to put fear into the heart of the press for seeking inside information.

What I hope will happen is that Mary McCarthy will be found to be utterly innocent and that Goss' power play blows up in his partisan face.
