Does your progressive station change the pitch of its promos?

The station in Columbus does, and it is very irritating. When they run ads for Al Franken, Stephanie Miller, etc., they sometimes speed them way up, resulting in silly, Alvin the Chipmunk voices, and they sometimes slow them way down, making Al Franken sound like Paul Robeson on dope.

I don't think you need to be a musician to notice this - it's pretty obvious. Why does it happen? All I can think of is that they have a longer or shorter commercial slot to fill, so they just change the playback speed to fit. Can this be right?

1. Yes, and they don't have the right equipment.

With the right equipment you can speed up a spot and keep the pitch from changing.

What radio station doesn't have that equip nowadays?

4. What progressive station?

The only progressive station in the Atlanta area is AAR and I can't even pick up the signal from that unless I go to satellite radio, which is out of the question because it costs money that I don't have.

5. I've noticed some of that, too

and I can't account for it.

In the old days, that might have been done to fit the time slot but even then, the "right" way to fit a speech into a smaller space was to edit out the gaps and the "ums" and "ahs". Used to be done with tape and razor blades!

But now, it's all digital. It's infinitly easier and quicker to edit out the verbal "extras" (and Al has more spaces, ums and ahs then any other human in radio that could be edited out - and they do - I can hear it as a guy who has done lots of editing of this type).

BUT....even more so....there are digital processes that can speed up or slow down any audio without effecting the pitch!

So why the chipmunks? It can only mean that someone thinks that that is attention grabbing....maybe????

Or it's very inexperienced editors who don't know what th software can do.

I can't believe there are any stations left (even poverty-stricken lefty stations) still stuck in the audio tape and razor-blades era!:freak:
