Santorum makes pitch to female voters
Some Pa. women at his D.C. conference were not so taken with his views on working women.
By Steve Goldstein
Inquirer Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - Facing a stiff reelection challenge, Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) reached out yesterday to a vital constituency: female voters.

Santorum was host to a "Professional Women's Conference on the Hill" and invited 3,000 community leaders, university officials, and other women from Pennsylvania. About 90 women attended.

The daylong forum featured speakers such as Education Secretary Margaret Spellings; Lynne Cheney, a conservative commentator and wife of the vice president; and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R., Texas).

The conference was closed to the news media except for the 35 minutes during which Santorum spoke and answered questions on Iraq, health care, and medical-liability legislation.

I think it comes between freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. Call it the 1 1/2 amendment. :eyes:

77. Does That Mean That You HAVE To BE Offensive??
Why can't you just admit it is not nice to be insensitive?

Why can't you just refrain from making "jokes" that you may find funny...and others may find hurtful?

Why the hell must you be so INsensitive?

Just because you apparently have the RIGHT to be offensive does not mean you must exercise it!

Damn it!! How many times must I say this??

It is the culture that accepts "joking" like that to be funny...that keeps us real transgender people from being seen as real people, with real feelings that ought to be respected.

80. Please dear, LIGHTEN UP!!!!!
The comment was NOT intended as a personal remark against ANYONE who is a transgendered person. IT WAS A JOKE - not a bigoted remark directed at or to any particular person. YOU are taking it seriously.
I understand you are sensitive about it, and have encountered bigotry and hatred in your life. We all understand that - We are liberals BECAUSE we get it.
But that does not mean we all will self-censor every single thing we say. If we did, we would not be able to make ANY jokes at all. And DU wouldn't be as much fun, if everyone had to be so serious and PC all the time.
Furthermore, humor is an excellent method of breaking down bigotry, and informing the ignorant. Ever heard of All in the Family?
Archie Bunker broke down more barriers in the real world - out here in rural America - than any other single character in television history. I know - I grew up watching it, and not on TVland reruns; I watched it the first time around. By laughing at Archie's bigotry and ignorance Americans began to understand and change their own bigotry and ignorance. Everyone knew Archie was being an idiot, and recognized that same idiocy in themselves.
Yea, occasionally we get trolls here who say inflammatory crap that smacks of RW repression. But the overwhelming vast majority of DU'ers are sensitive, caring people who would give you the shirt off their back, and the last dollar in their wallet if you were in need - no matter what your gender, transgender, sexual orientation, or whatever. If you stick around you'll find that out.
We all have our sensitive spots. Hey, I'm southern and white - 250 years on both sides of the family southern. I live in one of the reddest areas of a red state, and I'm right in the thick of a nest of Repuke snakes. You think I don't get ticked when we get dissed - which happens a lot more regularly than any transgendered type jokes? You think we southern DU'ers like it when we see comments that describe us all as inbred hicks, or whatever rude comments you want to fill in the blank with? NO, we don't. But we also know that 99% of the time it's not personal against us.
So chill, honey...no one actually is laughing at the trangendered in that post - YOU ARE JUST TAKING IT THAT WAY.

81. AGAIN...
it is not the INTENT I have issue with....IT IS THE EFFECT!!

This kind of "joking" leads to a cultrue that believes it perfectly okay to laugh at transgender people, and to not consider that they are real people, with real feelings, that should be respected.

You, of all people, by your own description, should know how hurtful it is when someone attacks, intentionally or not, something fundamental to your self-identity.

To that end, I'm willing to admit having cracked on Southerners in my time. In anger, I have maybe said hurtful things about Southerners, because all their states are red.

I realize that doesn't mean every Southerner is red...but, it's very hard not to be angry at the Red States.

Nevertheless...my point is...we should be a little more sensitive of other people's feelings. You wouldn't like "jokes" made about something fundamental to YOUR self-identity, would you?

And, incidentally, Prick Santorectum is my Senator, and I'd love nothing more than to toss him out on his ass!!

Fortunately, most of the rest of Pennsylvania seems to feel the same way.

90. I'm not trying to absolve anyone of bigotry, insensitivity, or anything
of the sort but your emphasis on EFFECTS is problematic. Sure, we all know the effect that the N-word is likely to have in almost any setting. And I'm sure we could all come up with a huge list of slurs and other loaded words that any honest person would agree might have very dramatic effects. But judging from the comments in this subsection of this thread, the "effect" that reply #3 had on you was all but unique. While we should all be mindful of the hurt that our actions might cause to others, if we set out to guarantee that we offend ABSOLUTELY NO ONE we would be immobilized. We certainly couldn't have ANY comedy. (After all, Chaplin's Little Tramp is grotesquely insensitive to people living in poverty.) I know I've made some really heated comments on this thread, but I sincerely want you to know that I respect your experiences. Believe it or not. I agree with your call for sensitivity, but I could never consent to the degree of self-censorship you implicitly are calling for, and, quite frankly, I hope that no one else would either. I routinely oppose fundies and thumpers in their quest to have the gov't protect them from ever having to confront views that challenge their own narrow outlook. Living in a heterogeneous society means that, now and then, you just might run into opinions that you don't like. That doesn't mean that we have to tolerate intolerance. But a lot of suffering comes from expecting the world to be as it is not. Please pardon the greeting-card buddhism, but I think it's true.

DON'T YOU REALIZE THAT IT IS "JOKES" LIKE THIS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOCIETY AND CULTURE THAT SAYS WE TRANSGENDER PEOPLE ARE NOT TO BE ACCEPTED AS REAL WOMEN, OR REAL PEOPLE...THAT WE ARE ONLY OBJECTS TO BE LAUGHED AT...AND THAT WE DO NOT HAVE FEELINGS THAT SHOULD BE RESPECTED??

What the hell does it take to get through?

I have had it with you.

You obviously are insensitve, and insist on continuing to be allowed to make fun of something fundamental to MY self identity, and I refuse to have that on MY DU. You're going on my Ignore list.

You even say yourself that you wouldn't make a racial joke...and you wouldn't make a "faggot" joke...so why is it okay for you to make a "joke" about MY PEOPLE?!?!

Why are MY feelings supposed to not be hurt...by something that would hurt anyone else's feelings?

Do you not understand that I have had MY basic identity questioned...I have had people try and DENY me my identity...that I have been ridiculed, laughed at...and denied jobs for it until I have literally been pauperized, and driven into depression??

I'm on meds and welfare now because of how shitty the world has been to me.

and it's jokes like this that contribute to society continuing to be shitty to me and people like me.

I just want to live a normal life like everyone else...without unfair interference.

103. There is one statement which I'd like to apologize for, or at least
correct/explain. It had something to do with "to the lurking Freeper these actions would "confirm" every negative stereotype..." No one should ever feel compelled to live their life, make decisions, etc., based on how they'll be perceived by others, let alone by freepers. (This isn't what I meant but it could easily have been read that way.) It might be naive to deny that certain actions will lead to certain consequences. But others' opinions should usually not be a deciding factor. And I think it's almost funny that our thread got deleted only AFTER things became more civil! Thanks for listening.

Seriously though, with a conservative line-up like that no wonder no one showed up. That's the lunatic fringe of conservatism talking there and there aren't a whole lot of people who identify with that fringe. These women are NOT the free-thinkers most of today's women identify with. Santorum's bunch are a throw-back to a different century and a great majority of women don't want to return to that repressive era.

Good luck with that election there, Ricky. You're going to need it along with all of the election tampering Diebold can muster.

a couple of months ago. It was hand addressed in ink, and on good quality, heavy paper. Several envelopes like a wedding invitation contained a letter, a color photograph of the family, a biography of Karen Santorum, (she is quite an accomplished woman, an RN and an attorney, and mother of 6 living children.) Of course there was the plea for money, 20 million for his 2006 campaigner!

I kept it around to show people as a curiosity. But it mus have cost a fortune to produce and mail this fancy plea for money. And how did they get my name? I guess from the nasty letters I have written to Santorum

(I'm not making up his name. And, yes, he did serve prison time for fraud) who was my U.S. representative used to send out. Or, rather, the always pregnant Kim Swindall. A picture of the whole family in front of The White House. With her "hand-written" (machine) letter on fancy stationery extolling "our Christian values". (Swindall's opponent was Elliott Levitas -- a wonderful representative who was defeated by Swindall during the Reagan revolution).
Fortunately, we got rid of Pat and Kim.
Their "Christian values" included fleecing the flock.

Signed, Sealed And Delivered...

My Target Letter Drives Rove Back to Grand Jury

"Karl Rove's appearance before a grand jury in the CIA leak case Wednesday comes on the heels of a "target letter" sent to his attorney recently by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, signaling that the Deputy White House Chief of Staff may face imminent indictment, sources that are knowledgeable about the probe said Wednesday.

It's unclear when Fitzgerald sent the target letter to Rove's attorney, Robert Luskin. Sources close to the two-year-old leak investigation said when Rove's attorney received the letter Rove volunteered to appear before the grand jury for an unprecedented fifth time to explain why he did not previously disclose conversations he had with the media about covert CIA operative Valerie Plame and her husband, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson, who criticized the Bush administration's use of pre-war Iraq intelligence.

A federal grand jury target letter is sent to a person in a criminal investigation who is likely to be indicted. A "target" of a grand jury investigation is a person who a prosecutor has substantial evidence to link to a crime."

Each little fascistette got her own row, no doubt. Or maybe he clustered them all down front to make it look like people actually showed up.

Remember John Candy as the Fishin Musician? He lived in a camp out in the middle of nowhere and would book bands to play there, him being the sole member of the audience. When the song ended, he's stand on his chair, his lighter aloft, screaming for an encore.

Sounds not unlike Ricky's audience.

66. The Sopranos comment on Santorum here:
http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/14366313.htm

On Sunday night's episode of "The Sopranos," Tony (James Gandolfini) told his shrink Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) that when it comes to homosexuality, he agrees with "that Sen. Sanatorium, who says if we let this stuff go too far, pretty soon we'll be f---ing dogs." Santorum, several years back, made similar remarks, only he used more delicate language than Tony did.

We called Santorum's office yesterday to ask if he was flattered about getting a shout-out on a popular show.

Apparently not.

"We're not gonna dignify that comment by commenting on it," said Santorum communications director Rob Traynham.

There also was a reference to Santorum on a recent "Veronica Mars" episode on UPN, in which a student blackmailing gay students used the alias "Rick Santorum."

1. waering jeans ( women wear jeans around the world to protest the rape case, in which a european judge declare that the women deserve to be rape becausae she was waering pants)
2. no sexual hassement in the work place ( a black women was harrase by her coworker at her job)
3. can join baseball leagure (a girl was kick out of a little leagure because she was striking out the boys)
4. can't fire a pregnant women ( before the 70's, pregnant women was fire, and not allow to work because they didn't want the students to know that women actually were having sex)
5. women were not allow to hold an bank account, before the 70's ( the bank reason that women get pregnant, therefore they will not be able to work, some banks even ask for proof of a women who syterilize herself, before giving them an account.)
6. women was denied an education, because they reason that a women did not need to be educated, and when women was given the right to an education, that they were taught home economic while boy was taught vocational classes.
7. if the parents ever got a divorce, the judge would award the husband the children, but now it is different.
8. women was consider properties.
9. women income would go directly to her husband, and divorce it will still be his, women was not allow to own her own income.
10. during the depression, women who was abandon by the father was not given a chance to work because many men believe that a women place was in the home, many children die as a result of this because the single mother couldn't afford food to feed the children.
11. in south carolina, a women clothes belong to her husband.
12. in this one state, i forgot which one, but anyways, it was illegal for a women to cut her hair without her husband permission.
13. women were not allow the right to vote
14. althrough they were counted, so that states would have more representive, women was still not allow to vote.
15. if a women was a teacher, she was not allow to wed or date because doing so would distract her.
