Anybody see Rep. Pombo on C-SPAN this morning ?

He looked like an extra out of the Sopranos. I think they said he represents part of the San Joaquin Valley? He has been in Congress for 10 years. I know that we cannot judge by looks but, if we did, I would say this guy looks like he might be in the Mafia... :)

1. I caught a few minutes of it. His
district includes the Sacramento River Delta area around Stockton and Lodi, full of people on the lower end of the economic scale who are voting in diametric opposition to their own self interest. To me he looked like a used car salesman eeking out a living in Manteca.

2. He 's the rep from CA-11 (a hybrid valley - SF East Bay district)

He is the environment's worst friend. The hairstyle is part of his "I'm a rancher" image. As for your humorous suggestion, the Mafia doesn't accept those from his family's ethnicity IIRC. The Pombos descend from Portuguese immigrants.

4. Pete McCloskey is running against him in the primary
They said on the TV a couple of weeks ago that a moderate Republican from the past, Pete McCloskey, was going to run against him in the primary. McCloskey is sick of what's happened to his party. I hope he kicks the shite out of Pombo.

8. I hope so too!
McCloskey would kick Pombo over the Endangered Species Act alone. He was pretty fired up at the anti-war event in Walnut Creek last month. It would give great satisfaction to see McCloskey beat Pombo in the primary.

7. Missed it... Pete McCloskey has some choice words about Pombo
Oh, why is Pombo afraid to debate Pete McCloskey?

STATEMENT OF CANDIDACY
of Paul N. McCloskey, Jr.
for the Republican Nomination for
Congress from the 11th District of California
January 23, 2006

To the People of the four counties of the 11th Congressional District of California
and their media representatives:

My name is Paul N. “Pete” McCloskey, Jr. I seek the Republican nomination to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 11th Congressional District of California.

You are entitled to view with skepticism why a 78 year old retired farmer and attorney from Yolo County would move 90 miles to San Joaquin County in order to challenge incumbent Congressman Richard Pombo of Tracy.

As a fourth generation Californian Republican, who served for 15 years in the Congress, in military or civilian service under ten presidents from 1945 until 2000 and during three wars, I feel strongly that the Republican Party needs to return to traditional values of honesty, high ethical principles, fiscal responsibility and a reasonable balance between economic progress and environmental protection. My wife and I have moved to Lodi because we feel that Congressman Pombo, by reason of his voting record and close ties to Indian Gaming Lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former Majority Leader Tom DeLay, has become an embarrassment to the Republican Party.

It is not comforting to have Congressman Pombo named as one of the thirteen most corrupt Members of Congress.
