Wal-Mart’s “sloppy hiring practices” allowed an employee to fondle a 10-year-old girl in the Forest Drive supercenter in 2000, the girl’s lawyer told jurors this morning in a Richland County civil trial.
“This case is about this very beautiful little girl who had her childhood innocence stolen from her,” Columbia lawyer David Massey said in his opening state-ment.
Wal-Mart’s attorney, Steve Morrison, told jurors in his opening statement that the Forest Drive store acted appropriately in handling the incident and it had no knowledge of Bobby Randall’s criminal background, which included several prior indecent exposure convictions.
“It may not be a perfect store — but it cares about its customers,” Morrison said.
The 5th Circuit Court trial in Columbia is expected to run into next week.
