Several years ago I received an email about prayer in schools that was very humorous and is exactly what I need to illustrate the issues surrounding that.
It went something like this, written by a parent(?):
"Well, I'm glad that our school district finally has instituted regular prayer in schools. It starts this week and I'm sure it will be good for my kids."
Monday: Johnny came home from school today and told parents about the new prayers the teacher taught the class and the reading she did from the Holy Book. Turns out it was a Mormon prayer and the book of Mormon. Parent calls up principal and demands that the teacher be fired and another Christian be put in her place.
Tuesday: Johnny came home and told parents about the new prayer the teacher taught them, how it was sinful to work on Saturday, and the reading the teach did from a religious magazine. Turns out it was a Jehovah's Witness teacher and the magazine was the Watchtower. Parent calls up principal and demands that the teacher be fired and another Christian be put in her place.
Wednesday: Johnny came home and told parents about the new prayers the teacher taught them, how infants had to be baptized to save them from Hell, and how the Body of Christ actually resides in blessed bread. Turns out the teacher was Roman Catholic, the prayers were the Hail Mary and the Rosary, and the teacher taught about the Catholic Mass. Parent calls up principal and demands that the teacher be fired and another Christian be put in her place.
etc.
Finally the parent demands that the school stop teaching prayer and religion and demands that they stay focused on academics. Parents will teach prayers and religion to their children.
Anyway, it was well done and I'd really like to have a copy of it. I've looked all through my thousands of saved emails and cannot find it.
