1. I'd rather they spend my money on palaces,
than on sponsoring terrorists.

2. Welcome to DU!
I had heard about this, and seen a couple renderings . . . but nothing like this.

Thanks for the post.

With the ice caps melting, I don't think those nice little rich-folks islands are going to last too long, do you?

;)

4. Looks as though their city planners
A. read too much science fiction
B. have taken too many trips to Vegas
C. are designing for people with more money than taste
D. all of the above

Good for them. At least they are spending it on something useful. What do we have to show for our nation's oil wealth? Nothing but a bunch of aging mansions that are either in private hands, or preserved at public expense. At least it looks like they are building places for people to live and do business.

14. No- UAE is building one of the biggest tourism and trade-hubs
on the planet... Already, oil is less than 50% of GDP...

Within 5 years, Dubai will have 3 of the 5 tallest buildings on the planet.

Unlike the Saudis, the UAE has continuously pumped oil profits back into the country for the benefit of the society-- not a small achievment... It has built one of the most peaceful and prosperous countries on the planet.

7. YOu know what. Good for them. It is their oil. And we are buying it
so why can't they make their countries look good.

I do find itfunny that they went western instead of middle eastern design. Makes me think Uncle Benny Laden will want to blow it up. You know how Uncle Benny hates western infuence and culture.

12. That's Disney's Magic Kingdom!
Disney's Contemporary Resort - you cannot really tell from these pictures, but the monorail runs right through the hotel.

11. They have the largest indoor ski resort there, too -- in the desert

I am simultaneously awestruck and revolted when I think about that.
