Wounded Soldiers Fight Off Bill Collectors at Home

Congressman Calls It 'Financial Friendly Fire'; Military Blames Payroll Errors

April 26, 2006 — - Hundreds of soldiers wounded in battle in Iraq have found themselves fighting off bill collectors on the home front, according to a report to be released tomorrow. The draft report by the Government Accountability Office, which ABC News obtained, said that hundreds of wounded soldiers had military debts incurred through no fault of their own turned over to collection agencies.

Army specialist Tyson Johnson of Mobile, Ala., had just been promoted in a field ceremony in Iraq when a mortar round exploded outside his tent, almost killing him.

Snip...

His injuries forced him out of the military, and the Army demanded he repay an enlistment bonus of $2,700 because he'd only served two-thirds of his three-year tour.

Payroll Errors, Says Military

And there are many more like Johnson. Staff Sgt. Ryan Kelly lost his leg in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq.

He didn't realize it, but the Army continued to mistakenly pay him combat bonus pay, about $2,000, while he was in the hospital rehabilitating, and then demanded that he pay it back.

Snip...

"By law, he's not entitled to the money, so he must pay it back," said Col. Richard Shrank, the commander of the United States Army Finance Command.

5. This is so wrong!
Jeebus, they fight the manufactured enemy "over there", and then come home and have to fight the military over the military's mistakes, and bill collectors who don't give a flying fig about anyone's situation, and just want their money. Yeah, way to honor the men and women in uniform, huh? :grr: :grr: :grr:

11. My Son is in the National Guard
and he has to be careful of his credit rating. He moved into an apartment before he was deployed to Iraq and he could not break the lease, so he stayed until he was deployed... My Father was in the AF 26 years and yes they frown upon bad credit, bad checks etc and they can discharge you for such things... So there....

It's not up to you to say whether or not my post applies, I can come in and post anything I want,, free speech you know...... Sounds like you have a big chip on your shoulder....

8. I know 3 military families in our neighborhood whose
houses are up for sale. Hubby in Iraq/home and wounded - pay screwed up, etc. These are families who CHOSE to buy and stay in Alaska because they love it.

FUCK GEORGE BUSH, DICK CHENEY, CONDOLEEZA RICE, DONALD RUMSFELD, KKKARL ROVE AND THE FUCKING GODDAMN HORSES THEY RODE IN ON.

Yes, DU friends - we in the community are trying to help. But when the military backs down on its promises, it really, really backs down.

10. You send them to WAR
You send then to die
You send them to be smash
For the rest of their life

You say support the troop
That you cant DENY
But now look at them
Do you ever CRY?

Did you even TRY?

Their life now in pieces
Their marriage on the rock
Their children got no food on the table
Their home now the street

You say support the troop
That you cant DENY

You smash their life to pieces
You TURN YOUR BACK on them
Now that they missing pieces
You got no more use for them

You say support the troop
You say you protect them
Are they American people
Or are they now MONEY gobbling WRECK

You say support the troop
You say support the war
You say you will protect AMERICANS
But you do nothing but LIE LIE LIE
