Spanish version of National Anthem? MSNBC poll may need our help:

Personally- I don't see how this can be controversial. There are several nations which have lyrics to their national anthems in more than one language. (Canada...) Now let's try translating the Star Spangled Banner into Navajo, Hopi, etc.

This translation of the national anthem is no different than if a German Sangsverein wanted to honor its German-American heritage by singing it in German. In this country last time I looked, you could be respectful of dual heritage.

I don't think the Spanish translation is being sung as a challenge or in defiance. It's merely symbolic in asking for recognition.

3. Hey folks! This is a diversionary tactic!

This is all that the RWingers have left (well, that and the war on xmas and easter). They cling to these meaningless, stupid "issues" in order to avoid the REAL crises we are facing. This is knee jerk stuff. Let's concentrate on the real deal.

4. Some languages might be offended

I don't know what the Irish national anthem sounds like but the slow pomposity of our anthem is about two grades below "Danny Boy" though worse things have come out of patriotic bars. Despite loyal patriotism, the best anthems are the ones best suited for the folk music of the ordinary people. Having an exalted pompous affair really doesn't inflate the dignity of a nation. The French anthem on the other hand has the tune that matches the passion and is the edgy best of that school. The Australian "Waltzing Matilda"
is closer to perfection and of course has been an embarrassment to pompous asses everywhere.

The sprightly "Columbia the Gem of the Ocean" had the giddy optimism of a less Wagnerian patriotism and was thus easily supplanted. Personally I would love a Woodie Guthrie song in place of all the military anthems. We haven't been in the war business that long and if we are to survive as a nation or species the whole elan of war will have to go anyway. The real gutsy American rebel carries a peace sign not a M-13.
