Columbus- A Cincinnati-area congresswoman lied when she claimed to have two college degrees as she campaigned last year in a special election, the Ohio Elections Commission ruled Thursday.
The commission rejected U.S. Rep. Jean Schmidt's argument of an honest mistake on her campaign Web site last summer that has since been corrected to show she actually holds one bachelor's degree from the University of Cincinnati.
The ruling came just five days before Schmidt - seeking re-election - faces former U.S. Rep. Bob McEwen in a bitter fight for the Republican nomination to represent southwest Ohio in Congress.
The seven-member commission unanimously said Schmidt, her campaign committee and her husband, Peter, the campaign's treasurer, each violated an Ohio law forbidding candidates from spreading misinformation.
