9. ABSOLUTELY! Normally, I tend to keep my giving secret
but this I would want OUT THERE to inspire others.

Hmmm, LTTE - great idea, BOSSHOG! Nothing stopping us all from writing them NOW and getting the idea out there.

If the GOP is so brazen that they will try to bribe us into giving up ANWR and our environment and heritage, we can use that money to throw their asses out of power so we can start the work of repairing the mess they have made of our nation and the deficit they have burdened our children and grandchildren with.

Hint: I am gonna change my sig line here today too ;) Every avenue of communication helps!

2. Exactly. And for those of us with Republican representatives...
Such as me, who is represented by not one, not two, but three Congressional Republicans, I'll be calling their offices immediately to thank them for their contribution to the DNC.

I believe virtually the whole of DU would heartily disagree, but thanks for the sentiment.

17. I disagree!....Sorry, knee-jerk reaction.
I think I piss people off a lot because I'm a contrarian by nature, so when I post, about 2/3 of the time, it's to disagree about some aspect of the discussion. So I keep quiet.

But again, thanks for the cyberluv.

An echo chamber lets intellects atrophy. Besides, I need a day off now and then. You could cover for me ;)

19. I used to think the same.
I completely agree that echo chambers are a dangerous thing and it does disturb me that sometimes the DU zeitgeist takes a tack that does liberalism/Democrats no good - the whole "Bush is Hitler" meme is like nails on chalkboard to me for reasons too boring to discuss.

I posted a little before the '04 elections and DU was much more open to dissenting opinion and something resembling debate.

But I think 2004 left a lot of people with very raw emotional responses and I noticed a dramatic upsurge in attempts to quash dissent and ferret out FR moles. Which I understand, totally, it's just that that ain't me. I almost like having FR trolls around because it forces me and other DUers to defend a position and better define ourselves. Enemies are useful things.

Additionally, I think the current administration and current political climate engenders an us v. them mentality that has really taken root, so anyone who voices dissent or a counteropinion or even just a different frame of reference tends to be viewed with very, very jaded eyes.

For a while, that pissed me off and, being the jackass I am, I waded into threads with the mentality that I would take the contraposition because dammit, DU is my community too and I'll be damned if I'm going to be run out of my own cyberhome just because I'm a different liberal than others might be. But then I mellowed, or got tired or whatever, and just sort of decided that DU is what it is and if people want it to be a support community more than a "debate club", well, that's their right and I'm not going to try to piss in their cake.

20. "..current political climate engenders an us v. them mentality.."
You nailed it! Neocons want everything in terms of black and white. Shades of gray mean thought and facts and they don't want that!

All the more reasons for those of us who like to call foul on jerking knees on either side to stay in the game.

I take breaks now and then when it seems like there are too many people too damn dumb to work to save. But in the end, I come back swinging. My sister calls me Crusader Rabbit. I don't mind the label at all. Somebody has to play the fool and illustrate a nuiance beyond black and white.

When you get fed up/burned out, give me a PM. Really. The buddy system has advantages ;) I am sure I need a pal now and then.

7. they did it for tax cuts
They bribed the middle class with about a $100 tax break (at least in my case) while they gave the majority of the breaks to the top 5% income brackets like people like Cheney,

10. Agreed
I don't trust anything a republican does or advocates. I think they just wanted to stick "their" idea out there to have the democrats oppose it so they can blather on about how evil and anti-consumer democrats are. That's how their minds operate.

16. We can make this win/win.
We can make them rethink cheap bribe with our own money by telling them what we will do with the $$ if they are that friggin stupid.

But, they pulled that tax rebate trick a couple years ago, they might be that foolish again, and if so, we pass the $$ along to DEM candidates

21. Will this $100 be taxable income? Any tax attorneys out there?
Just wondering if we'll have to pay taxes on this "windfall."

I really hate it when they throw crumbs at the slaves, like this.

They treat us like cheap whores, who can be bought off for pennies.

I don't need the $100. If they really want to please us, stop the sickening, senseless, shameful, Iraq war. That'll save a whole lot of $100s.

28. If it's anything like that "tax rebate", it's our money to begin with
And come tax time, you'll have to claim it as income (again) and deduct it from your refund.

What a fucking scam.

But yes, great idea!

30. Sure they would, Steph. The $$ may buy them an ounce of goodwill
and our grandchildren will foot the bill. It'll just be added to the deficit some other generation will have to pay off. Why wouldn't today's GOP do it? They have already sold our next couple of generations down the river anyway? What's a few million more?

Seriously, I hope we raise bloody hell and stop this foolishness. I figure one way would be to tell the schmucks we will give the cash to DEMS and throw the GOP off the Hill for their idiocy and horrible policies.
