ELEANOR HALL: To political protests further afield now. Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been forced to resign amidst threats of desertion from his coalition allies. His resignation comes after a crushing defeat in regional elections two weeks ago, with the Prime Minister stepping down in order to avoid a potential snap election.

But many are describing the move as a mere formality, as the 68-year-old is expected to resume his position within hours after reshuffling his Cabinet.
:( that would suck.

5. Old story
Look at the date.

Silvio's party was defeated in national elections this month, but he was still trying to fight the outcome. I guess he gave in.

Berlusconi to quit and make way for Prodi
Sat Apr 29, 2006 12:36pm ET

ROME (Reuters) - Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Saturday he would resign, ending three weeks of wrangling over a narrow election defeat and clearing the political decks for Romano Prodi to take power.

Berlusconi would hand in his resignation to President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi on Tuesday after a scheduled cabinet meeting, officials said.

He had previously alleged election fraud and had refused to formally concede defeat after the April 9-10 polls.

8. Berlusconi Indicates He Will Resign
Edited on Sat Apr-29-06 12:17 PM by cal04
Premier Silvio Berlusconi indicated Saturday he was ready to resign after long denying electoral defeat, saying a meeting expected to formalize his departure was scheduled for Tuesday.

Italian news agencies ANSA and Apcom reported that Berlusconi said he would resign then, clearing the way for the incoming government of center-left former premier Romano Prodi.

The reports did not directly quote Berlusconi saying he would resign.

In response to a question on when he would resign, Berlusconi said, according to ANSA: "The Cabinet meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday."
