Battered Person Syndrome

Symptomology

ICD9 code 995.81 <1> shows the syndrome as including "battered person/man/spouse syndrome NEC" and any person presenting with identified physical descriptors rather than psychological descriptors falls under the general heading of "Adult physical abuse", classified under "Injury and Poisoning" <2>. In lay terms, this is a reference to any person who, because of constant and severe domestic violence usually involving physical abuse by a partner, becomes depressed and unable to take any independent action that would allow him or her to escape the abuse. The condition explains why abused people often do not seek assistance from others, fight their abuser, or leave the abusive situation. Sufferers have low self-esteem, and often believe that the abuse is their fault. Such persons usually refuse to press criminal charges against their abuser, and refuse all offers of help, often becoming aggressive or abusive to others who attempt to offer assistance.

1. Yes and no
The early part of the syndrome is when the battered spouse becomes addicted to the relationship, when episodes of abuse are followed by a honeymoon period during which the abused spouse is treated like they were when they relationship was new, romantic, exciting. As time goes on, the honeymoon gets shorter, until finally it disappears. The addiction remains, which is one reason battered spouses remain in denial.

It's hard to think what the honeymoon might have been. The bait and switch tax cuts? Stupid with a bullhorn on the wreckage in NYC? Stupid preening and strutting on that aircraft carrier? Hard to say.

However, I've noted the battered spouse syndrome with bushbots. The more he beats them up, the more they swear he's the best and that things are going to change for the better. It's right around the corner. Blah. Blah. Blah.

3. I think it's really down to 3-issue voters
Guns, Gays and God. And frankly, most people are tired pandering to them.

12. No, it's more down to the tax cuts
Most god, guns and gays voters needed those tax cuts to sweeten the pot. They're the only thing they think Stupid has done right. Sure, their taxes went up in all other areas, but hey, that wasn't Stupid's fault, was it?

Don't underestimate the effect those tax cuts had on the dimwit psyche.

If the Democrats campaign on working class pocketbook issues again, they will be unstoppable. There's only so much mileage you can get out of hate when your base is getting hungry.

5. I see three distinct reasons.
1) Ignorance/stupidity. They just don't know any better.
2) Mental instability of some kind. Mostly in the case of blind faith, either religious or otherwise.
3) Corruption. These people are the ones who this administration actually helps. All 1 or 2 percent of the population.

8. it's sadder but easier

I think the bulk of them just live in the Past. It's 1964 to them forever. Well, until they get it beaten out them, as you say.

The rest just like the power trip but won't get off the carousel while it's still turning.
