Colbert saw his speech as an opportunity to provide all the typical leftist talking points while Bush was part of a captive audience.

Even the left-wing Knight-Ridder guy on MSNBC afterward said that Colbert was awful. He noted that the standard dinner features the President being self-deprecating then the comic guest host making fun of both parties, but Colbert only made fun of one party.

When the pro-left bias is so blatant that someone from Knight-Ridder notices, you know it's bad.

Plus there were very few funny lines, most of it was just a rant. And his "film" tried to make a hero of that (butt)munchkin Helen Thomas for her idiotic falsely-premised question.
