Here's what Colbert did
Colbert cornered Bush and forced him to listen. Ah, comedians can get away with so much. Colbert did what comedians do, and the attendees at the White House Correspondent Dinner were:

Colbert was brilliant!

On taste, if you saw Colbert's routine compare it to Bush's:

Destroying America's health care system
Trying to steal Social Security
Leaving every child behind
Outsourcing jobs
Outsourcing national security
Putting the nation at risk
Pushing the Alternative Minimum Tax on Americans
Turning oil industry royalties into subsidies
Spending $500,000,000,000 on the Iraq war
Falsifying WMD information
Continuing an illegal war in Iraq
Failing to deal effectively with the Middle East peace process
Pushing a failed foreign policy that resulted in a win for Hamas
Leaking the name of a CIA agent -- Plame outing
Supporting Republican gerrymandering (Republican version of election reform---create districts in which it’s no longer necessary to suppress the African American vote at the polls)
Stonewalling real election reform
Sanctioning torture
Illegally spying on American
Trying to avert blame for the Bush administration's incompetent response to Katrina
Appointing cronies at every level and in every branch of government
Lying about dealings with Abramoff and other criminals
Allowing Halliburton to rip off tax payers
Obstructing Congressional oversight
Enabling a dictatorial-style government in America
Endorsing payola
Other law-breaking and unethical activities

I think he beats the comedian hands down when it comes to bad taste. In fact, his actions are criminal.

I was wondering a few moments ago if there will be fresh bumps, bruises, and wounds on his face and hands tomarrow. I have a theory that sometimes the SS has to take him down to control him.:yoiks:

6. And INCREDIBLY BRAVE- a TRUE Patriot-
A thousand other comedians would have used the
opportunity to further their own careers- Colbert
used it to speak for US, within feet of the criminals
responsible for the destruction of this once great country.

8. I am so glad that this happened as it did
Two times this year he has been forced to listen to the truth ... CSK funeral and tonight. Two times is all ... in all these years.

This is why he never goes out to appear before an unscreened crowd.

blivet** knows truth was spoken tonight ... in front of the press and in front of the public (thank you C-SPAN) and he can't continue to deny it and survive for two and a half more years.

It will happen more and more now. Hopefully, without the need for a funeral or a dinner.

7. I mean, when you think about
how much Bush hates, hatesthe truth....with the controlled, hand-picked crowds...the way he doesn't want to read papers, doesn't want to hear any 'bad news' from his staff, eschews outsides, drives out of his way to avoiding seeing protesters...

And then he's forced to sit there - sit there and take it. Ha! Must have been his worst nightmare!

11. Everyone was all smiles after the Prez's gag
But when Colbert got up there and started jabbing the room fell silent. I don't know what would have been better; If he would have knocked the room on their ass laughing or what he did do, brought up uncomfortable ideas ad silenced them. He stole the show and flat out embarrassed them on their home field.

in medieval Europe, the court jester was the only person allowed to speak unpleasant and insulting truths to the king without fear of retribution.

16. Yes, rather fitting
The whole room, save for a few, was as uncomfortable as could be, deservedly so.

I was kind of in shock, myself, until I came here and read the words of wisdom from yall. Thanks.

Colbert rocked the whole world tonight and after I watched it that old song about "won't be fooled again" was ringing in me head.

We did get fooled again, and Colbert gave us a stark reminder of the fools we've been.

25. pay no attention to the people that say the glass is half full.
snip:

Now, I know there's some polls
out there saying this man has a
32% approval rating.
But guys like us, we don't pay
attention to the polls.
We know that polls are just a
collection of statistics that
reflect what people are
thinking in "reality."
And reality has a well-known
liberal bias.

>> So, mr. President, pay no
attention to the people that
say the glass is half full.
32% means the glass -- it's
important to set up your jokes
properly, sir.
Sir pay no attention to the
people who say the glass is
half empty, because 32% means
it's 2/3 empty.
There's still some liquid in
that glass is my point, but I
wouldn't drink it.

Bushco, Scalia, Military, and particularly the press. Including Helen Thomas was a fabulous tribute to her.

Colbert will be on 60 Minutes tonight. There were some people who enjoyed, it but the majority looked really uncomfortable which was as good as it gets. Can't wait for the babbling punditocracy on the Sunday talk shows in a few minutes.
Colbert was brilliant.

about it...

Did anyone notice that when the head table was introduced...the speaker mentioned the Bush comment that "he had a face for radio"...and then did not mention the shrubs name....as he introduced him? He referred to something about Laura's speech last year.

Obviously, I didn't get to see the tv program, but I have read the text of Colbert's segment. I also saw Bush and "Fake Bush" and heard what I considered a very corny routine by the impersonator.

38. You are 100 per cent correct. It's not about Colbert. It's about Bush.
I was thinking about how Colbert would now be labeled for playing his little game at the dinner. He will go down in history , no doubt. And how incredibly stupid and blind it is to even think about what happened in those terms.

It's not about Colbert. It's about Bush. And how he could give a shit about Darfur. And how he could have Chong jailed, while Lockjaw Limbaugh skates away laughing. And all the rest of the crimes that we don't even know about yet.

42. The truthiness hurts (This is excellent!)

The truthiness hurts

Snip...

On Iraq: "I believe the government that governs best is the government that governs least. And by these standards, we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq."

On Cheney's hunting incident: "To sit here at the same table with my hero, George W. Bush...I feel like I'm dreaming. Somebody pinch me. You now what, I'm a pretty sound sleeper, that may not be enough...Somebody shoot me in the face."

On Bush's response to global warming: " is like boxing a glacier...Enjoy that metaphor, by the way, because your grandchildren will have no idea what a glacier is."

To Senator John McCain: "So wonderful to see you coming back into the Republican fold. I've actually got a summer house in South Carolina. Look me up when you go to speak at Bob Jones University."

On Bush's "steadfastness": "The greatest thing about this man is that he's steady, you know where he stands. He believes the same thing Wednesday--no matter what happened Tuesday."

On the press response to the White House shake-up and the metaphor of "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic": "This administration is soaring, not sinking...If anything, they are re-arranging the deck chairs on the Hindenburg."

On Bush's approval rating: "Now I know there's some polls out there that say this man has a 32 percent approval rating. But guys like us, we don't pay attention to the polls. We know that polls are just a collection of statistics that reflect what people are thinking in 'reality.'

Pay no attention to people who say the glass is half empty...Because 32 percent means it's 2/3 empty. There's still some liquid in that glass, is my point. But I wouldn't drink it. The last third is usually backwash."

On Bush's response to disasters: "I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers, and rubble, and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message, that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world."
