Mexico to legalize pot...great idea wish we'd thought of it...
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Mexico's Congress on Friday approved a bill decriminalizing possession of small quantities of marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and even heroin for personal use, prompting U.S. criticism that the measure could harm anti-drug efforts.

The only step remaining was the signature of President Vicente Fox, whose office indicated he would sign the bill, which Mexican officials hope will allow police to focus on large-scale trafficking operations rather than minor drug busts.

"This law gives police and prosecutors better legal tools to combat drug crimes that do so much damage to our youth and children," said Fox's spokesman, Ruben Aguilar. (Watch as U.S. lawmakers react with outrage to the plan -- 1:46)

If Fox signs the measure and it becomes law, it could strain the two countries' cooperation in anti-drug efforts -- and increase the vast numbers of vacationing students who visit Mexico.

3. It just makes sense...
The propaganda doesn't work anymore, too many people know the lies they've been telling...
Let em be upset, I'm not to sure about heroin but the rest needs to be decriminalized ... we've tried the war on drugs, it hasn't worked now lets try this and see if it does...

15. What's his rational?...
A majority of Americans thing the same way the Mexicans do about this subject...or could it be they think it will spread and they won't be able to use that as a political football...

Plus they would have to scramble for new laws in order to keep their 'For Profit' prisons up...

20. His rationale was that it would create problems at the borders...people
bringing drugs back or coming back stoned. I think it would mean alot more work for San Diego being a border city..more traffic too I guess!!!

21. I'm sorry...
but your statement about coming back stoned was funny, and maybe thats where we should start the debate...

I'm sure that it would cause problems with people want to bring some back across the border, maybe now they'll listen to us and give up the fight...

In all my years of smoking pot I have yet to find anything detrimental about it. It just needs to be used wisely, and it's up to each individual to determine that threshold...

28. Same is true of alcohol, yet that is legal for adults.
And the health risks associated with alcohol are indisputable.

7. 'Could harm anti-drug efforts'.
Um...right. Because everyone knows that prohibition is effwective, and that treating addiction as a criminal rather than a medical problem really works.

Fun fact: the Netherlands, where cannabis and some other 'soft' drugs are decriminalised and readily available, and registered heroin addicts receive maintenance doses of the drug by physician's prescription, has much lower rates of cannabis usage and heroin addiction than does the US.

US policy on this issue is a failure that is only effective in maintaining and funding an extensive bureaucracy, in serving as effective pretext for erosion of civil liberties in the name of the 'war on drugs', and in increasing the number of persons incarcerated for victimless crimes.

8. I disagree with Ecstasy, Cocaine and Heroin
But the marijuana thing I have no qualms with... just as long as they have laws against driving while under the influence because I think driving is the one thing that people need to be 100% clean for.

9. the US war on drugs....
is quite successful for the corporate prison industry in the USA.

We incarcerate more people than the USSR did at the height of the cold War.

The USA is gonna win this "war on drugs" even if it takes putting half of us in prison!

San Miguelle Allende is $80 and 18 hours on the bus from my little town, Amsterdam is about $1000 and 14 hours away on the plane.

Here's one american consumer of travel services already doing the math.

How do you get in on the ground floor of the "coffee-shop" business?

13. ...and we portray the Mexicans as stupid. We are the dumb shits.
to put up with asinine draconian drug laws that have no basis in reality. We have built entire industries just to thwart off the harmless drug marijuana. We are fucking stupid.

17. All those right wingers were so furious when Fox commented on
US immigration laws. That is the thought that struck me when I read, "prompting U.S. criticism that the measure could harm anti-drug efforts."

We can comment on their laws, but how dare they comment on ours. LOL!

27. Good for Mexico!
I strongly agree with them on this issue. I think that drug use should be treated as a health issue, not a legal one. In the US, we still lock up sick patients for taking their medicine! It looks like Mexico and Canada are way ahead of us on some of the important social issues.
